Still connected to servers or people outside of Geo Filter

I've been having this issue for some time now but I never got around to actually trying to fix it till now. I have my geo filter set on strict and I have it on a 500 mile radius aroun where I live. I want to say about 50% of the time I connect to servers on the east coast. Mostly the North East servers. Probelm is I live in Los Angeles, Ca. I've tried all kinds of setting changes that I've read through the forums and I cant figure it out. I'm always getting a ping of 60 to 100. When I do connect to a closer server my ping is still above 40. Yet when I run a speed test i get a ping of 3 to 5. Now I know im not going to get a low ping like that all the time but I see people getting a ping around 5 to 20 all the time and they live within 10 miles of me. What am I doing wrong. If you are connecting to servers outside your radius then you either have strict mode disabled or are using ping assist. If you enable strict mode and set ping assist to 0 you will never connect to a server outside your radius. What game are you playing?

 

I would run an internet diagnostics test from the Duma to see if your base ping is fluctuating, you could also run a PingPlotter test, it is more accurate and it will let you know if there is any problems with your line. What Pollutionblues said above is fantastic so I'd recommend checking out his suggestions.

 

There's another possibility - those servers you're seeing might not be the host of the game, but could be background NAT / Console / Matchmaking servers. They could even be other players connected to your host.

 

When you're in a game, screenshot the Geo-Filter map (when it's got all the players / hosts nicely visible). That should let us check it out

I've never had much luck with it either... I don't think this feature has worked right since day 1 tbh

Thank you everyone for the help. Unfortunetley I dont understand anything you said. Also I dont understand any of the language in the thread you guys posted. Looks like its just something Im going to have to deal with. Sucks since i spent alot of money on this thing last year.

Firstly in this section: https://imgur.com/a/cW9Ojuv make sure your gaming device is selected and the ‘enabled’ option is ticked.

 

Next in this section: https://imgur.com/a/FxYXujf make sure that the ‘strict mode’ option is ticked and ‘ping assist’ is set to 0.00ms.

 

These settings will make sure you never connect to servers outside your radius.

Can you post an image of the top of your geofilter page please? You either have the wrong device selected or you don’t have the geofilter enabled.

This is really weird - there's likely something else going on. Could you factory reset via Settings > Miscellaneous? This will clear your settings, and your password will become 'netdumar1'. After the router has rebooted don't change your settings - just add your device to the first slot on the Geo-Filter, enable Strict Mode, set Ping Assist to 0ms and set your radius to 600km. Do you still connect to hosts outside the radius? Which game are you playing as well?

@David824 If you add more devices/services to your geo-filter they will be different colours. Now that I've defaulted settings and don't have my Xbox One added anymore my PS4 is showing red and when I get around to adding Xbox back in it will be green.

 

I've been playing the BO4 beta and wasn't able to get matchmaking to work at all under the geo-filter regardless of settings so I had to disable it for the weekend. I'll post the results of my testing in WW2 after my settings reset as soon as I am able.

I am now no longer able to find any games even with geo-filter disabled. It would appear that resetting my router to default settings has broken it. Should have left well enough alone I guess...

Got it working again... not really sure what the problem was. Definitely can't use 600 km though since there are no dedis within 600 km of me and it fails every time. Now that I've got it dialed in it doesn't look like it's connecting me to anything outside of my filter range. It looks like the factory reset may have done it.

This is really weird. I'm really glad you got it working, but it seems like an issue that should never have happened.

 

With the Geo-Filter disabled the R1 should act like a standard router. Since you weren't able to connect with it disabled, that says to me it might have been your ISP messing around. I reckon maybe they blocked a port (which often they do) which you needed for gaming. Maybe?
