100% CPU and high DHCP lease change events. Router slows down.

Recommended Posts

I tried to log into the router and noticed it was slow to open the page.  I noticed that one CPU usage was pegged at 100%. Not both CPU's, they would alternate to 100% but both still very high. Normally the CPU's utilisation is low. I then checked the logs and it showed a lot of DHCP events happening quite fast. This is not normal. I checked the device MAC addresses and they happen with computers, iPhones, iPads etc, so I don't think it's the clients. Please see attached pictures. When the router gets into this state, I have to reboot it.

I think what is happening is that DHCP Lease is by default set to 24hours. Looks like yours renews at around 10:30pm. You shouldn't need to reboot. When it happens again open a cmd prompt on your PC and type the following:

ipconfig /release and press enter

ipconfig /renew and press enter

once it's done then try and access the interface, does it appear to load fine then?

Thanks Fraser. I'll take a note of it and keep a lookout the next time it does a DHCP refresh to all devices. It was just strange that the router became very slow with high CPU utilisation as normally and after a reboot, it's very low at around 25-30%. Very happy with the router otherwise and looking forward to new features.

I imagine its just because of the DHCP Lease running out, if its not then we can look into it further

This is what I reported after a few hours of owning my router.  My logs always indicated DHCP lease renewals and then my connections would drop.

Are you on a firmware I sent you for drops and has it worked?

I never installed the firmware for drops on purpose since I was trying to determine root cause.  I was able to get mine stable without using it and am waiting for the new firmware with all those fixes bundled together. I have observed the DHCP and CPU spikes but was just holding out for new firmware. :)
