Is my setup correct ? XR500 + fiber ONT

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just wanted to know if my setup and settings for my connection are optimal combining Fiber ONT alcatel lucent  G-240w-B and Netgear XR500.

first of all, my XR500 is one of those versions that have incorrect Ethernet port order on the device front, is that a big issue?

now my setup is the following : ONT( 200/80 down/up mbps) > XR500 > PS4 pro and Xbox One X, both hardwired.

my ONT has its DHCP, WIFi, firewall  all OFF. and all ports 1-65535 forwarded toward my XR500 static IP. I don't use the DMZ of my ONT, because from my old experience of my PS4 connected directly to the ONT on DMZ... the PS4 lagging like hell and I am getting instant deaths as much as I can remember in Call of duty games. So, I forward all the ports and disable ONT firewall instead.

on the XR500, I set anti-bufferbloat to 70/70. DumaOS classified games ticked, the bandwidth sharing is equal between all devices with share excess ticked.

on WAN settings, NAT filtering secured. UPnP is on by default. no port forwarding, No DMZ to the consoles.

now, my big issue is the MTU!

the ONT is on PPPoE connection, thus its MTU is 1492. however, the XR500 has the default MTU of 1500, should I modify it also to 1492 ?

is my setup optimum ?

thank you very much in advance.

Hi,

welcome again.

last day I have been running some tests with my setup. I found some significant issue.

my ONT seems to be as bad as expected, nothing strange, I expect an ISP free supplied ONT to be just like that! LoL.

When I use my super XR500 behind this bad ONT, either on DMZ or all port forwarded, there is huge packet loss taking place.

I checked through this website: https://check-host.net/

like half of packets are dropped when pinging my IP from the website.

to make sure it is the ONT, I put it in full bridge mode, and assigned the VLAN ID tag and the PPPoE user & pass on my XR500 directly.

WoW, not a single packet drop has appeared!!

all packets are 4 sent, 4 received. no loss.

now, the issue is in my last post. whenever VLAN tag is activated on XR500, the other features of the router get stopped like QoS and UPnP.

are there will be any updates to fix the VLAN compatibility soon ?

thank you very much again.

Great to hear you've resolved that!

What do you mean they get stopped? Do they just not apply QoS, no UPnP entries or do you get error messages?

thank you very much Mr. Fraser, for your fast response.

I mean by stopped:

1- in the QoS, the upstream bandwidth control, in both anti-bufferbloat and device bandwidth allocation is not limiting the upstream bandwidth, for example, I set the upload bandwidth in anti bufferbloat to 70%, always selected, around 50 mbps out of 80 mbps , when I measure the speed through speedtest and dslreports, the upload still 80 mbps, no matter what I do, resetting the router, reboot.. etc. same with device bandwidth allocation, upstream bandwidth control is not functioning.

2- UPnP is always working and not responding to my commands though GUI. for example when I want to disable it to run port-forwarding instead, I untick enable UPnP to stop it, but I can still see it opening ports although it is stopped.

I hope if you have a fix, because my upload buffering is excessive and I cannot back to the normal setup due to the ONT packet loss. I hear there is BETA firmware available that fixes some issues, is it available? does it address this issue ?

thanks again.

Can you double check that you don't have QoS completely disabled in Anti-Bufferbloat settings please.

UPnP might show the ports it had opened previously until the advertisement period runs out.

No it doesn't fix anything like what you've described

the QoS is enabled, the "disable QoS" option is unticked.

I checked that also, the UPnP is opining ports after it been disabled, I disable it first once I turn on the router while nothing in the table, then went to Xbox and test the NAT type ( to trigger the port 3074), then it is opened on UPnP table then.

by the way, one of the Netgear support staff has already communicated with me two days ago and she saw herself the issue through teamViewer. he promised to look further into the issue and back to me, I am still waiting for her response.

thanks.

Hi There I noted that you have a model of the XR500 that has the ports misprinted in the wrong order 1234 instead of 4321 , this was a manufacturing error by netgear, who are fully aware.

If you were to raise an RMA with netgear , assuming you purchased the unit as new, citing the misprint they should replace with a correctly designated unit

thank you Mr. PRO TEAM.

actually I already contacted Netgear about the issue, as I understand, it is just the port reversed, no serious hardware issue are presented, only that glitch. considering that I bought the router from Amazon, returning it will be a long process. As long that it is not a big issue. I dont need to return it.

Mr. Fraser:

due to built in speed test on the XR500: it always fails with me, I don't know why, any ideas how I can manage to get it working?

thanks.

How are you doing the test by factory reset and then through the initial setup wizard or manually going through the wizard in Settings?

Does both the download & upload part of it fail?

It'd not necessary to go through it order to make Anti-Bufferbloat have the correct bandwidth. You can do a manual speed test and input the results in manually.

thanks Mr. Fraser,

it fails both up and down and through both initial setup and setup wizard.

due to main issue of the topic, which is the QoS and UPNP on VLAN tag setup,

I found a statemnet on Netgear user manual that might be making sense,

on the VLAN tag section they mentioned this statement:

" If you add a VLAN tag group to the bridge, packets sent between the device and the router’s Internet port are not processed through the router’s network address translation (NAT) or firewall"

this might be the reason of the problem, the upstream packets specifically are not controlled by NAT on VLAN bridge. that is why download speed can be controlled by anti-bufferbloat but upload is not.

thanks.

Speed test may be related to your setup as no reason otherwise why it shouldn't work. Do you have a friends house with a different ISP where you could take the router to test/confirm your setup/VLAN is the cause etc.

Thanks for that additional information I've updated the ticket on our end about this so will see if we can get a fix in place for this for QoS side of things.
