Im beginning to think only one thing matters and it's not the NETDUMA

Recommended Posts

I feel like I'll never get the great connections you see some people have nearly every game, even people that have the netduma. Beginning to believe that the only thing that has any bearing is how close a person lives to a particular dedi server. I'm in VA smack in the middle of two servers. Have a 13ms ping on internet diagnostics, but a 20-30 ms ping to NJ or GA. There is always going to be someone closer to the server and regardless of what I have my CC set at (bc well we never max out our bandwidth here at home), most of the time, 4 out of 5, I'll lose that gun fight. And if the servers are crap, then why doesn't it effect everyone. I'm left wondering if I lived closer maybe I'd go 40-2, or 30-0 with a nuke, or V2, or whatever the current COD streak is. Sadly, probably wont happen because I'd run into the guy with the lower ping.

I play to have fun but I'm competitive have always been growing up, but find myself pissed off because I pay $120/month for internet, plus the money for the game, $200 for the router and $50 for a new modem because the last one had the PUMA 6 chip in it, all in the name of tried to give me a fair shot. Only to realize after HOURS and HOURS of playing that in the end a 2 ms ping will beat a 15ms ping every time, and there's nothing I can do to even the field.

Kinda feeling like I've wasted money. Cant be the only person who's thought this before..... OK rant over. I feel a little bit better now.

No problem with ranting! Living next to the server has long used as an insult/joke towards someone with a good connection because it would give you a slight advantage. However, with good Internet and the Geo-Filter you are ensuring you are always on the closest server for you (if they don't have a Netduma they will be getting a mixture of servers, so some games will be amazing for them, and other's will play less well).

The main thing is to use Geo-Filter to get as consistent experience as possible and then you can match your playstyle to the connection , instead of having to keep changing ti depending on how good the connection is.

As the guy with that lower ping, I can confirm my experience is only good when everyone else is on low latency. Otherwise it means nothing. Higher latency means you move ahead of where you're seen, but up to a certain point it doesn't negatively impact how fast your shots register, so you're a terminator and everything seems more in sync. On lower latency against a higher latency player, you get less time to react as you have the latency between you and the server, and the latency between that player and the server, stack so there's desync with regards to player positions. They'll see you and have a window to shoot you before you even know it, so when you finally receive word you've been killed you've been shotgunned to death while the killcam will show some windmill hipfire from a slow firing AR lol. You don't get faster hit detection to a certain point on the lowest latencies possible because your shots are disregarded if you're already dead before being told about it. This is extremely noticeable if you've ever played hardcore and shot someone with a one shot kill weapon, only to receive one weird delayed hitmarker that's nonlethal AFTER you've died. Unfortunately that's the laws of physics for you.

CoD 100% plays better on 30-50ms. At times I've heard faster hitmarkers on 74ms to New Jersey (from the UK) than on 6ms to the London server. It's almost like you're invisible (see YouTubers who find nothing but enemies who don't shoot back - they're not necessarily awful, just behind the action). The three biggest wizards I've ever watched play CoD are on 38-44ms to their respective servers, both in NA and EU. They have crispy hit detection but don't supposedly get "aimbotted" by impossibly fast enemies only for the killcam to tell them they were a deer in headlights not reacting lol. My best experience in the past two years was on 42ms to the Polish server, but unfortunately it's dead and even games of TDM can't be found on it, so I have to make do with dying to 180ms Qataris and Iranians before I see them while just half a frame of latency away from server perspective.

Shame because when everyone else in the lobby is under 30ms, it's dreamily responsive. The only way to have a BS free experience is play on LAN where nobody can run ahead of you, on a game with low baseline delays and high update rates. WW2 is unresponsive even with 60Hz (well 60/54... that's probably the problem lol). IW had 100Hz to the server and 20Hz from, so the being shotgunned by slow killing fully autos was common even against a lower latency player.

At least you live in NA though. Whenever I've set my home over somewhere in the US and tried to connect to a server there, red dots usually appear in very tight clusters so the only thing to worry about is that guy who's streaming or otherwise running a bloated/congested connection (if you live in the US you can just use ping assist alone with your home in the ocean). In western Europe it's very common for half of the lobby to be east or south of Albania. If you've ever had issues against Mexicans or Puerto Ricans, double that lag and now you know how it is playing against Saudis, Kuwaitis, players from other Arab regions and Iran or Pakistan haha. In those lobbies on <10ms you're just going to get MUGGED.

Oh I almost forgot - this is a great article on how networking in CoD works http://denkirson.proboards.com/thread/5972/networking-lag-compensation-hit-detection

If you do a find in page search for "stack" you'll find this:

"It's important to note that this is simply dependent on a connection discrepancy. It doesn't matter who has the better connection on either side because the latencies of the players involved stack together. You do need to acknowledge the fact that in CoD, if either you or the opponent is lagging, then they have a window of opportunity after you take cover to kill you."

and:

"In this scenario, you are camping. Enemy comes around the corner and starts shooting you. On your end of the spectrum, he hasn't come around the corner yet. Basically, he sees you before you see him simply because he is moving into the room and you're already there. Once again, hit detection favors the attacker in this engagement; and once again, the significance is a result of the two players' combined latencies."

In short, your low latency means nothing if it's multiplied by ten just because of the connection of the other guy LOL

Well good news, the tech came out today and replaced both lines in the cable connection to the central service and to my house. He said that both lines were bent and weathered. It plays 100x better so far.....

Good stuff, glad to hear it. Maybe you were getting some heavy packet loss or something like that as a result!

It's a pity that geo filter does not work, I live in Europe and shows me USA servers, to play eg in fortnite or bf 4 can turn off geo filter, or lose connection with session, and so already two years, bad location of servers

I have to agree that 50ms is the sweet spot for WW2. Being from Arizona, the dedicated server in California can be hit and miss at. That server pings at around 20ms. If I set the geo-filter over the southern US and connect to the Atlanta server at around 50ms, it plays quite well very consistently.

I mainly play Hardcore Team Deathmatch.

I do think a lower ping is better. I mainly play Modern Warfare Remastered now and keep the geo-filter wide open so I can see where everyone is in the lobby. Sometimes there will be people from Brazil, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan in the lobbies. Usually the lobby will play like crap, but their score will be nothing to brag about. It plays best when everyone is located a similar distance from the server.

I did a test where I managed to get into a dedicated server in Moscow. I was pinging it at around 300ms. The delay was pretty hefty. Shooting was delayed, movement was delayed, reloads were delayed, and even animations such as inspecting the weapon were delayed. I could tell there were a few BS moments where the BS was in my favor, but overall I would say it definitely played worse than playing on a nearby server.

I have ended up in a lobby against a full clan from Germany as well. I believe it was on the Atlanta server. I was pinging them all around 250ms or more. Played 3 games against them and could not do anything. No hit detection, getting shot around corners, getting shot by an enemy that hadn't shown up yet, hitmarkers up the yin-yang, and tons of BS. It was pretty much unplayable. In this case they had a clear advantage and I could do nothing to compete with them. There was no change over the 3 games I played against them. The other local players on my team were quitting out. I usually hold my own pretty well as my average KD is around a 2 KDR. In this case, maybe since there were so many higher ping players in the lobby, the lag compensation (handicap) was thrown out of whack and lower ping players were penalized.

Moral of the story: I believe these Call of Duty games have a handicap. Your gameplay quality is more or less a crap shoot and appears to be pre-determined. I can play the same players over and over on the same map and have great hit detection and minimal lag one game, and the next have tons of lag, BS, and no hit detection. I can play against players from other countries and dominate them, next game, can't touch them. I'll see a player that has a 0.5KDR consistently, and out of nowhere they have a series of huge games. I think Call of Duty is designed to allow higher ping players and poorer connection players the ability to play. They won't be gods, but they do bring down the overall connection quality of the lobby. Also, I think a number of your "really good games" are gifted. They have to keep you playing. It's all about the money. The more people playing, the more money they will make.

P.S. Throttling my connection and or packet loss have never improved my gameplay. It has always made it worse. Higher Latency does not give me an advantage. The more stable the connection, the more consistent gameplay will be.

That's what I mean; it's not that high latency offers the best experience, just higher latency. If I play on 70ms from England to the New Jersey server I'm invisible, nobody gets time to react against me and hitreg speed is about the same. In fact I often get slower hitmarkers on 7ms because of the sheer number of 150ms+ Asians in my game. If you're on a two bar or something there'll be a point where your shots start regging far too slowly. When I watch PC players (they get latency numbers instead of bars), the three biggest melts I've seen are all on 35-50ms lol. They don't get laggy hitmarkers and they get time to react but they aren't BSing people by seeming invisible.

Scores are all over the place in those lobbies with terrible matchmaking but I will objectively die more to worse players dropping packets, on high latency with high jitter or any combination of connection icons (in IW). If everyone's under 30ms the average player looks awful and I don't get instantly shotgunned by AR hipfiring TV WiFi players. If I'm on a certain higher latency up towards 100ms I make 4KD sweats look like slow Christmas noobs on inverted controls lol.

I can't take a game or gunfight seriously unless matchmaking is solid as it should be for a fast paced FPS game with questionably low update rates and the additional obstruction of engine baseline delay to get around. CoD is awful compared to other popular games or other Quake engine games in that regard. If I go from playing a game on 7ms and getting instant hitmarkers, to playing the next game in the same lobby on the same server on the same latency and start getting 15 frame hitmarker delays, I'm out lol

Notice all of the "best" painfully mediocre YouTubers in IW who weren't particularly accurate or fast. The majority had hexagon icons on their screen and got faster hit detection with PACKET LOSS than I ever got on 7ms vs Iraqis 4000 miles away lmao. Recent CoDs man... *facepalm*

I am in Toronto Canada and only play UK servers around 80ms. The NA servers run at 30-70 and are trash. I melt in the UK and their accents are a nice break from US .

Haha you must do it to get some peace and quiet. I've noticed NA lobbies have so many mics popping off in the average lobby. EU games are usually silent with so many languages floating around. Good luck vs KSA/Q8/UAE/ALG/IRAQ clantags though ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Thanks for the heads up...must say though it's great hearing them call each other wankers..

Are your lobbies normally sickeningly polite? ;)

I prefer the French mic'd up players saying "big nooby, putain" lmao

Lol this is pretty interesting to read. I thought no-one used their mics anymore but maybe that's just an EU thing!
