Windows VPN and Netgear XR500

Recommended Posts

Hi Again

When I have switched from the R1 to the  Netgear XR500 my windows VPN (PPTP) for my home network stopped working. It allows me to connect to my device however I cant browse the internet. I have deleted and recreated  settings, port forwarded 1723, checked the firewall and rebooted etc.

I reconnected the R1 to see if it still works and it does immediately. Is there a setting i'm not aware of preventing this to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Ok so I figured out it was because I selected Open NAT. Once I select secured NAT its works as it should. Is there a way to have open NAT selected and have the VPN working? Will it effect my gaming have secured NAT?

Cheers

That's an interesting one - if your game is functioning correctly using the secured NAT then you should be okay to use it for now, though some other applications might not work properly. I'll make sure Fraser sees this thread when he's online as he might have some insight, though it's my understanding that the secure NAT option is the same as Open NAT but with some added firewall protection. Some applications / protocols don't respond well to it though so let us know if you have any issues with it.

We don't know what the issue is so we can't work on a fix. If it was working after changing the NAT then it sounds like you may have changed another setting that caused it to be blocked. Make sure on the Geo-Filter your PC is not selected. Disable Traffic Prioritization just incase it's incorrectly prioritizing it. Double check there are no crossovers with triggering, forwarding, UPnP or DMZ.
