How to setup pppoe

Replacing r1 with the xr500 tomorrow and wondering how to setup pppoe I'm with bt with their bt infinity I presume I should of used popped with r1 but I never bothered coz I always had an open nat type

When you first start up the router you'll go through the setup wizard which will detect your Internet Type. It should then either input the details automatically or allow you to put the PPPoE information in manually and that's it! I've moved this to XR500 section also.

Just an quick question aswell should I of used pppoe for the r1 and thanks too fraser

If you are using the BT Hub, you shouldn't need to enter PPPoE settings... I think.

I too am on BT Infinity 1 but I use a Draytek Vigor 130 instead of the BT equipment.

Not if you are using the BT hub, no.

Also with the xr500 is it the same principle port 1 of bt hub to port 1 of xr500 then into the bt hub dmz or can the xr500 just be on its own

Port 1 to port 1 yes. XR500 isn't a modem/router combo

You would put those details in the PPPoE section of the R1 / XR500

The openreach modem is just a modem, no config or pppoe login required but you would then have to use pppoe login on the router to establish a connection.

BT Openreach (unlocked) HG612 modem - bridged

 

XR500 - PPPoE

 

I get full download speeds as reported by the modem stats, so the XR500 is doing its job well with PPPoE.

 

ps. these are my settings;

 

pps. DNS is optional - i use it so i can set filtering up better for my kids to use when online. (and its free!) Click OpenDNS (or google it)

 

Dont forget to set Connection Mode and Idle timeout settings (as shown below)

Sorry for the bump guys but just had a quick question that's related.

 

Hey BD, I just got a HG612 to replace a TP Link VDSL modem (it had a short power supply cable and wasn't convenient due to the location of my wall socket and power sockets). Am I right in thinking the setup will be just the same, and that I simply need to plug a cable between the HG612 LAN1 port to the R1 WAN port and then enable PPPoE in the WAN tab of the R1?

 

It's an unlocked HG612 so I can access the GUI. Do I need to check or change any settings on the interface? I've noticed on a video guide that there are settings tabs like 'advanced' etc. Do I need to set up the correct VLAN ID, sync type etc, or somehow get it into bridge mode manually? I've read that the HG612 can handle DHCP and whatnot so I want it running as a modem only for the "cleanest" setup possible, with the R1 handling everything it should. Thanks in advance.
