Base Ping Increased?!!!

Hi I moved over to BT from Virgin Friday 23rd March.

I set everything up and I ran the Internet diagnostics tool, receiving exceptional across the board with a 12ms ping. I have been running tests today it and it appears my download has decreased around 5Mb and the upload Around 2Mb. Thats not much of an issue as they said my speeds would fluctuate for the first few weeks.

The main thing is my 12ms base ping is now 20ms. Diagnostics only shows good now. I reset my modem (VMG1312 B10A) and my netduma.I ran multiple tests since and now it seems the12ms ping I had on Friday is no more.

I was hoping someone could maybe shed some light as to why this might be happening and if there is any kind of fix for this.

Thanks in advance

Rick.

Hi. I didn't reset my modem until after the ping increase . . It went from 12 to 20ms.

= 8 ms of depth as described above, so the DLM has switched you to interleaving as you have had enough errors in a period for it to change you to interleaving.

Just leave your modem on 24/7 with a tidy home network > modem > short RJ11 to the modem (or a longer twisted pair cable) > Netduma.

And you should get fast path back as long as you do not have a line issue outside your property :)

Been there. My ping went from 7ms to as high as 33ms during Dec til last month and I lost over 50% of my speed.

Second time its happened since being with BT (the first there was a problem and they fixed it) but this time, even an OR engineer couldn't find a problem.

Eventually, my speed came back and ping dropped back to 7ms, no reason at all.

Anyways, since you've only just gone over to fibre, what Zennon said is probably the case, just wait a few days and all should be well :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Guys. Unfortunately I'm still on Interleaving. I have had my modem running for 10 days as suggested but no luck.

I have an OR engineer coming tomorrow, as I plan to have him do a DLM reset.

I want to make sure I don't get charged a callout fee. Should I hook up my HH6 and disconnect my Netduma and Modem?

Also I want to make sure I don't go back on to interleaving any advice on how to do this?

Ive read up on capping speeds through Modem to reduce errors. I was thinking about configuring my modem for this tonight and then setting it up after engineer leaves tomorrow. . .

Like I say Im still new to this but any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Rick

Yes take the Netduma out so he can not blame it.

Set up...

Master socket > short 1m ADSL cable > HH6

Never use an extension unless it is twisted pair.

Interleaving is quite normal and not something I would not call an engineer out over unless your line is dropping and you have a clean network.

It takes up to and over 9 days for the DLM to make a change, how long has it been on for 24/7?

If you think you have a line fault :

Use ping plotter to check if you have ping spikes, also do a quite line check on your phone line by connecting your phone to the test socket behind the face plate of the master socket and ringing 17070 then option two and listen for any noise, pop's or crackles.

This could be caused by the home hub itself.

On TalkTalk I was finding that my ping kept increasing every few days (and my 'uptime' was resetting), it went from 9ms to nearly 30ms over the course of a week.

I swapped the ISP hub out for a standalone modem and my ping dropped back to 9ms the following day and stayed there. My 'uptime' stopped resetting too.

Hi. The Engineers came out on the 5th of April.  However there was no DLM reset as the fault was down as a line issue and not broadband.

After that I just decided I could live with the interleaving on. The modem (VMG 1312 B10A) has been on 24/7 with 1m rj11 as suggested since the 5th and this morning an extra layer of interleaving has been applied taking my ping to 28 now.

When I tried ping plotter I wasnt getting much ping spikes and the pings were stable.

Any suggestions as to what to do? BT checked the line and couldnt fine any faults. Not prepared to stay on 16 ms of interleaving!

Thanks in advance
