Throttling Issue

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've had the XR 500 for about a month now and have been loving all the things you can do with it. Just in the last couple of days this started to happen. I normally have a download of 150mb and upload of 24mb. For some reason my download changes to around 13mb and upload to 2mb. I use my XR primarily for my xbox one x. I use port triggering and added my xbox to devices, everything has been working really good until a couple of days ago. The only way I have found to get my down and up speeds right again is to factory reset it. Once I put my settings back in it does it all over again. At this point I don't know what to do. Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Deez, welcome to the forum! First of all let's check if your settings are right for your speeds.

I'd recommend going through the Setup Wizard again, which can be found in Settings > Setup > Setup Wizard. Near the end of the setup wizard, a speed test will run. Allow the router to automatically configure the XR500 for your speeds.

After this step, do you receive your full speeds? If not, let's manually configure your settings. In QoS, set Anti-Bufferbloat to 'when high priority traffic detected' and set the sliders to 70/70. This will ensure your connection is only throttled when you're gaming - when you run a speed test, make sure you don't have a game running so you get your max speeds.

I'd also recommend clicking 'Reset Bandwidth Allocation' and clicking 'Update Distribution' afterwards.

Make sure you're only running your speed test on a wired PC using a CAT-5e, CAT-6 or CAT-7 Ethernet Cable. If you run this test on any other device the test will likely not be accurate.

Please let me know if this helps!

Hi Jack, thanks for the response. When I went through initial setup the xr 500 correctly gauged my connection (150 dn and 24 up). Once I input basic settings ie, Port triggering, add my xbox, place my geo filter and reserve an ip for my xbox. Shortly after the speed dips to 13 dn and 2 up. I had left my bufferbloat at 100, 100. Did not touch the flower petals for distribution. I tried to keep the changes as basic as possible to see if I could figure out which change is affecting the difference. Once I notice the change I did go through the setup wizard again it comes out as 13 dn and 2 up. I even tried placing the bufferbloat to never and ran it and it comes out the same 13 and 2. I do have it connected with a cat 6e cable. Again, I've had the xr 500 for about a month and I have changed settings and tweaked it to where my gaming was a lot better and have had no issues until a couple of days ago.

Port Triggering is not the same as Port Forwarding. It is very likely that you are port triggering the ports required for a speed test. Put your console in the DMZ in WAN Setup, you should still get an open NAT. Then see if you get full speeds directly connected to a wired PC.

Ok, so I tried disabling port triggering and ran a speedtest and then placed my console in a dmz and ran a speedtest and they both came back the same 13 dn and 2 up.

If you disable QoS completely from the Anti-Bufferbloats settings do you still have the speed decrease? If so go here and login, there should be a number for 24/7 Netgear support and they should be able to resolve your issue: http://support.netgear.com/

Yup, I just did another factory reset and got the correct numbers up and down. The bufferbloat initial settings are set to never, the first thing I did was reserved my xbox ip and clicked apply then did another speedtest and the numbers dropped to 46 dn and 20 up. I touched nothing else, so there is something happening. Thanks for the attempt I will contact netgear support.

Okay please do let us know the outcome as that is very weird behaviour! Are you doing the speed test direct to a PC? If console they can give inaccurate results

Spent a couple of hours with tech support last night and after some 1v1 time they couldn't figure it out so it looks like I'll be getting a replacement. I also noticed a youtuber posted his settings for the xr500 and his firmware version was 2.2.0.7-RC2. I'm still at 2.1.0.6, the website still has my version as the most up to date, just thought that was interesting.

That version is more recent but contained a few hotfixes for some minor bugs, ANyone on that version is either a beta tester or has ezperienced one of the bugs,

Sorry to hear you needed a replacement, it sounds like a hardware issue so hopefully the new version will solve all!

Yup, messaged the youtuber and he said he has been working with netgear and the version is not yet ready for public release. I hope the new one is bug free as I really enjoy the control the xr500 gives you.

Thanks Deez - it sounds like a hardware problem if you disablecd QoS, so next one should work great!
