Terrible Bufferbloat issues with XR500

Recommended Posts

I have a 500 Mbps down 50 Mbps up internet connection, that my ISP likes to fluctuate my upload down to 40 Mbps, so I set QoS sliders to 70% each, but no matter what I do, Bufferbloat on dslreports.com is always averaging okay, but sample hits high 200 ms pings. I don't know what else to do. I've switched modems twice. I had the Arris SB6190, that has the Puma6 chipset, but that issue has had firmware updates to resolve the issue they had. Never the less, I switched to an SB8200, and pings never stop fluctuating on dslreports or on pingplotter. Also, with your router, I am never able to get much past 200 Mbps down on dslreports. Speedtest and such get past 500 Mbps. Also another problem...I also have the R1, and even with all settings correct, I can never get past 400 Mbps download on any site. Hope I can have some resolution here.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

I'll first start by explaining the test a little bit. Bufferbloat or lag only occurs when your connection is saturated, so that means if it's not saturated your connection should not experience these high spikes that the results are showing. Secondly when QoS is applied it prevents your connection from being saturated completely and therefore bufferbloat cannot occur. It's showing A across the board for your results so if like its saying those spikes would occur you would definitely not be getting A, A, A+.

Do you actually experience any high pings when QoS is applied? Such as on the game ping or when running PingPlotter?

If you do not get full speeds via DSLReports but you do on others then I would say it is rather an issue with that site, I never get full speeds either on it regardless of the equipment I use. I would guess this is because they're using multiple different servers in different locations at the same time (which makes sense, your bandwidth would be split between them).

How are you testing speeds? Via WiFi or ethernet? You've already said that your ISP makes your speeds fluctuate so if indeed that does happen directly connected to the modem then I would say that is the cause.

Thank you, I know all that. My pings fluctuate over 30 ms in game even when on dedicated servers. I don't experience these bufferbloat issues when using my R1. Only the new XR500. And it's not due to the multiple servers, I notice on CPU usage, when using dslreports.com, it goes to 100%. And I experience high pings on pingplotter, sometimes going from 20ms to over 200 ms to twitter.com or others when I leave it running a couple hours.

The whole purpose of the anti-bufferbloat you advertise, is that if my connection becomes saturated while I am gaming, then I will not lag. The test I use is to test if I will lag while I am gaming if someone is to download or upload something. And right now, It does. And your router hits 100% cpu usage when I run download tests and never hits over 200 Mbps. R1 can hit over 200Mbps on dslreports, but never hits over 400-450mbps, only 80-90% of my connection, even though that router is advertised to hit almost 900 Mbps. Bit with QoS on, can never hit more than 150-160 Mbps.

Dedicated servers pings can fluctuate that's not too abnormal - depends on the load at the time. It's very unlikely that just a DSLReports test would cause the CPU to reach 100% unless you are doing multiple other things on the router at the same time, the router spec is beefy so to reach 100% on a speed test alone is highly improbable.

These ping plotter tests were you using WiFi or ethernet?

Was this direct to the modem or XR500?

What QoS settings were you using at the time?

Were you using Hyper Traffic for your PC?

It's not highly unlikely. I have everything hard wired to the XR500 and then that to the modem. I have the router software open on my one PC, and dslreports open on the other. IT normally sits between 10-20% CPU usage with nobody using the network. I run speedtest.net, and not much fluctuation. I run dslreports.com, and it climbs all the way to 100% on both cores. I've run this for weeks now, and still same results. And I said before, I ran QoS on 70% both ways.

What are your QoS settings, specifically:

  • Bandwidth set
  • Goodput on/off?
  • QoS completely disabled?
  • Apply when - Always, When High Priority Traffic Detected, Never?
  • Bandwidth allocations to devices - Download & Upload
  • Share excess on/off - Download & Upload?
  • Traffic Prioritization - DumaOS games enabled or manual rule?

Have you changed any settings on the DSLReports test itself?

I've had similar issues such as the ones that Phyter has described above. They dont occur if i switch back to the R1.

You said had? What was the resolution, what was the cause?

Sorry "have".When i do a speed test on dsl reports for blufferbloat on the xr500 i get those high 200+ pings when it is set to 70% on the Qos sliders. On the same exact settings on the R1 it doesn't happen, its weird . My speeds are 100 up 6 down btw.

Do you experience lag when gaming when QoS sliders are applied and your connection is saturated?

Do you see ping spikes on PingPlotter when QoS sliders are applied and your connection is saturated?

Bandwidth set - 500 down 50 up

Goodput - On, and I've tried off before

QoS completely disabled, same effect

Apply - Always

Bandwidth allocation - always hit reset when I change settings, just like i did on the R1. I don't mess with it

Share excess - On

Traffic Prioritization Duma OS Games - Enabled

I've changed many settings on dslreports. I used deafults. I mainly just set the servers according to latency, I manually put in my modems up and downstream channels, and I use High Def Bufferbloat.

Yes i do experience lag, i regularly get 30 ms+ spikes on dedicated servers , on the R1 on the same dedi, with same qos settings ect. those high ping spikes don't exist.

What about on PingPlotter?

Bandwidth set - 500 down 50 up

Goodput - On, and I've tried off before

QoS completely disabled, same effect

Apply - Always

So you're saying with QoS enabled or completely disabled you're still getting these slowdowns? Then it can't be the router doing that or something somewhere upstream is misconfigured. Unless you have a faulty unit.

I'd like to do a 1 on 1 to figure out your issue, please let me know a date/time you'd be available.

This might be due to the hardware acceleration issue on port 80 that i just learned about, but downloading something from my PS4 Pro or my Xbox One S, or both at the same time, seems to get limited around 200 Mbps Down, same with Steam, and CPU usage on the XR500 goes straight to 100% on both cores. I do have a 500 Mbps connection, and I know it wasn't found to be an issue during testing, but I do hope that after what Iain told me, that they do eventually hardware accelerate port 80 with a firmware update.

That will be the port 80 hardware acceleration yes, so please could you retest that once we have added that to DumaOS.
