Grouping devices in congestion control

Recommended Posts

Hi, I think we all have some devices at home that we don't use often, and when we have 15 entries in the device prioritization graph, it ends up being a mess and we can't use the graph at all. Grouping the devices we almost never use at the same time would solve the problem.

For example, 3 computers would have a set percentage and the devices within the group would have to share their given percentage (which isn't a problem if we don't use them often or at the same time).

Thanks in advance.

Hey, welcome to the forum! That's a really good suggestion and something we could easily incorporate into DumaOS. For now though you should be able to delete devices from the device manager that don't have an IP address and that will free up some space.

This is a really smart suggestion - we've been hoping to implement a similar system for a while in DumaOS. Here's hoping we get around to it :)

I made a big post about this a (long) while back with a variety of suggestions for grouping users / devices, different ways the 'share' could be implemented.

Can't find it though.

Yeh I thought someone had brought this up before. We brainstormed ideas for this in the early days of DumaOS development, it's a lot of work though so unfortunately it didn't make the launch. Still, it has to happen in the future - it'd make a lot of peoples lives easier.

I have suggested this in past videos of mine, and I would like to see a custom group(s) option, to allow the user (adminstrator of the dumaos router) to put devices of their choice into different groups. I have over 20 devices on my network, and deleting them is not an option. Being able to assign a max amount of bandwidth to that group that it is allowed to use (shareable or not) will be a very powerful feature. I've had access to this kind of feature on another well known router since MW3 days; although I would then put those devices into a certain IP range; and then assign bandwidth management rules (with minimum and maximum bandwidths for both upload and download) to those IP ranges. Obviously again, I can also then have rules for individual devices, game consoles etc. also.

I would really like to see this via a future R-App update for device prioritisation.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Sim, it'll probably be in the pipeline soon!

There isn't a great deal of flexibility in the bandwidth allocation at the moment and I think it's one of the only parts of DumaOS that could be improved upon.

As it stands, turning off 'share' to limit a device / user to a max of 5mb will affect the bandwidth of all other devices as it locks that amount of bandwidth to / from devices.

With only 25mb and often 20+ devices in the manager, turning off the 'share' option will limit all devices to 1.25mb.

To allow 'enough' bandwidth, I would then need to reshuffle the allocations for all devices that may or may not be in the house and in use.

As soon as the bandwidth hog leaves the house or as soon as I start/finish gaming/streaming/working, these requirements change dramatically as completely different devices will need the bandwidth that is allocated elsewhere.

The ability to include/exclude individual devices and/or groups from the 'share' would be very useful too, as would profiles for all of this.

I still haven't been able to find the original 'novel' I wrote on this subject, was probably about 18 months ago but seems to have been swallowed up by the auto-archive and I don't remember what the thread was called.
