xr500 Bandwidth Allocation

Recommended Posts

I was an early adopter of the R1 and now with the XR500. I've always allocated certain percentages to all the devices with in my home, and I do NOT share excess between devices.. this has always worked best for me. I do this with the xr500 and do speed tests and speeds on those devices are correct. However as soon as I start up a game on the PS4, I no longer just have the allocated bandwidth on the PS4. I get full bandwidth numbers from my ISP, If i close the game and then run a speed test I'm back to my allocated speeds.. Any ideas of why the allocation is being bypassed when a game is detected.

Hi maul,

Firstly thanks for being an early adopter on both the r1 and the xr500.

Have you upgraded to the latest version? You can tell becuase in the top right corner of DumaOS you see a small circle like button that you can click. If you can click it then you'll upgrade the router to the lastest version of DumaOS.

The reason you're seeing different speeds is due to the new Auto QoS feature. It only applies your buffer bloat settings when you're playing games. That way you get low latency when playing and full bandwidth when you're not.

Hope that makes sense, if not let me know. Also please let me know if you've upgraded. :)

Thanks Iain, and yes I upgraded to the latest version.

So even when I don't want but 20% of my available bandwidth given to my Console, as soon as I begin a game it will automatically go back to giving 100%. That just doesn't seem like what is suppose to happen, but that's what is happening.. It would seem the opposite would apply, when I'm not gaming I would have 100% available and then when my game begins that the 20% I have allocated would be all I would see.

Hi maul,

You're doing this speed test on the PS4 itself is that correct? I am assuming you're using the Traffic Prioritization feature for the console, the feature puts that device ahead of the queue so essentially it bypasses QoS settings. Now this will not ever be something that you notice because it's only used for low latency traffic like games but if you're doing a speed test then it might be getting prioritised and ignoring QoS.

Turn off Traffic Prioritization and repeat the test, does it work as expected this time? If so that's great, Traffic Prioritization is not meant for highly intensive applications like a speed test.

Yes that seems like reverse logic. Can you post a screenshot of your entire QoS page. Including the anti-bufferbloat, bandwidth distribution and traffic prio panels.

You may need to post multiple screenshots as it spans more than the height of your screen. Thanks.

We are about to board a flight. We will try get wifi but if it doesn't have any we won't be able to respond for 9 hours. Sorry for the inconvenience if that is the case.

Yeah, Fraser, I'm going to DSLreports on the PS4. You are correct turning off the traffic prioritization corrected the issue.. if I turn off the traffic prioritization I get my allocated bandwidth then.. That's different, on the R1 I had the PS4 in traffic prioritization and always only got my allocated speeds, which is what I like.

Hi maul, what exactly are your traffic prio settings? I would have thought the default or "console" service would work as you expected. Only priotising game traffic.

Have you used a port range, and perhaps added TCP?

I only had the default DumaOS games enabled.. after disabling it I tried just adding the PS4 to the Traffic Prio, but the same thing happened.. so for now I've just disabled the default DumaOS games and removed the PS4 from traffic prio...

But yeah Iain, it never occured to me to try disabling that because with the R1 it ran as expected with the PS4 in Traffic Prio.

Hi Maul,

That is really weird, I'll double check as soon as I land. Are you free for a 1 on 1 Friday or Saturday? If so let me know what time works for you please.

In the meantime you can try a quick trick. Go to the Device Manger. Find the playstation and change the type form Playstation to computer. Then go back to traffic prioritisation.  Try adding the device, when you click next select the advanced option.

In there use the default source ports (1-65535), then set the destination ports to 1024-65535 and choose UDP. Disable the "automatically prioritise DumaOS classified games". Then you can go back to the device manager and make it a playstation again. Does that fix the issue?

No sir, that didn't fix the issue.. sorry long day at work, just now had a chance to try it.. Maybe with future updates the issue can be resolved, but I'm not to worried about it.. I've just decided to adapt and use some of the new features the DumaOS offers.. which are nice..

Oh ok great to hear. I'll be testing that in the office today and I'll let you know our findings.

And this definitly not a static target. The NG team were impressed how big our roadmap is :D

I'll be asking their team about an early access programme for xr500 customers. So they can get updates quicker. Keep an eye out on the forum.

Finally I'll respond here with my findings.

Should be possible without a doubt. I have beta tested a router of theirs(Netgear) a little while back, as a beta tester. I still get beta build's before they push out final/official build's. So I see no reason this couldn't happen with this router.

Hey Scotty, I mean even quicker than beta :)

Well it's possible if they supply you access to the source code of there latest build's. With open access to the DumaOS side of things. So then y'all could make changes, and remerge a new firmware build, for alpha testers.

But in this case if netgear allows this, i wouldn't be surprised they would want some kind of agreement not holding them liable if the router is bricked. I know with Asus routers they have a recovery mode you can put the router into, if bricked, and reflash firmware. But i don't know if netgear has this kind of safeguard with there routers. Which makes unbricking process much more difficult to do.

I don't know if I can go into details. So I'll err on the side of caution. All those things you mention are covered and more.

Also don't mention the dark side Asus! Kiddin of course :P
