no polygon but only radial filtering? this was one of the most requested features!

also no ping assist? :S

thats much better than geo-filter, a local host can still run netflix and lag like crazy

will ping assist be part of the final build?

and geo-filter still a pending patent after 2 years? what happened lol

So, we could expect a big difference than Netgear version, if it is like this, so it won't be a problem to waiting, despite I've been counting days until release date.

That will come in the near future. I may need to make a post addressing as the same questions keep coming up.

We noticed that continually adding features to the r1 was becoming difficult because the new feature often broke an existing one. Because it wasn't designed from start with expansion in mind.

DumaOS has been. It is seriously simple to add new features which we will be doing from now on. Polygons, dampening (anti-jitter), etc there all coming. It's a piece of cake to achieve with DumaOS.

Btw it also has a bunch of other features. Full blown hardware acceleration meaning no software jitter at all. Automatic anti-bufferbloat. Far more advanced DPI, can classify and priotise far more games and non gaming traffic. Fully modular UI allowing all your favourite features to be accessed simultaneously on the dashboard, etc, etc

this text should be part of the DumaOS website as it clears pretty much all of my worries

thanks Iain :)

since everything will be developed on the R1 first before it may or may not come to the Netgear DumaOS i assume the R1 hardware specs are still good enough to handle those new features with eg dampening and software jitter?

Iain if not then please release a new R2 with better specs, i rather throw money at you guys than giving it to a competitor who has the last word on which features will be used on their router and which wont

Your questions are bot similar so I'll just respond once. Here is how it development is going to continue in the short term. In parallel we will:

  • Porting to the R1
  • Developing new features for the Nighthawk (NH)

So NH owners will see new features added to their NH before the R1 gets it's version of DumaOS. We can do this because DumaOS allows us to split development into what I like to call top half and bottom half. Top half is all the DumaOS features which will be growing extensively. Bottom half is actually getting it working on different hardware. Cool thing about DumaOS is these tasks are pretty much completely separate so different developers can work on different tasks.

We intend to throw a lot of development to top halfs, think of it as develop router Apps. So loads and loads of features are going to appear on both platforms in the new future. When I say NH is behind R1 I say that because NETGEARS testing process is far more intense than ours. So everytime we want to release a new version we have to go through about 2 weeks of testing on that version. NETGEAR will probably approve of nearly all features as it is in their interest to do so.

The R1 can handle most features the issue with the R1 is speeds. This gets worse the more complicated the protocol. People are already aware of this but for example Wi-Fi speeds will never improve we can't make it faster. Improving speeds for different WAN protocols is also impossible so if you're maxing out PPPoE already unfortunately we can't do anything about it. The other downside of the R1 is we don't have all of NETGEARS features. There are quite a few cools things especially their USB support. That is going to take us long to integrate as bottom half developers will need to work on that. Don't worry we will release DumaOS on R1 before working on other bottom halves.

A bit of an essay but I hope that clarifies the issues for you. Thanks for the support on either platform it really helps us :)  Btw for what it's worth working with NETGEAR has been great they're a very reasonable company and we enjoy working with them.

thanks that does indeed clear up quite a lot

Iain you better are part of the lower half dev team, m trusty R1 needs the best inhouse developer that it can get xd

if you dont mind your text raises two more questions though id understand it if question two cannot be answered

1) does the usb support really matter? from my experience most routers use that as some sort of optional NAS or media center, is that the case here too?

2) does the licence agreement with Netgear include Netduma to not release a new router with better specs? something like that would make sense as it would just be logical for Netduma to launch a R2 model next to the NH that can keep up with it

Heh yeah Im doing bottom half for the r1 mate. Yeah we should have got the info out better to the community. I sometimes forget a lot of you guys like and enjoy the details of the development process.

To answer your questions:

1) a lot of people want usb. Main uses are turning router into NAS or media centre. But obviously gives you lots of extra capabilities beyond just hard disks.

2) nope netgear don't see us as a competitor. They can't and have no intention of blocking us. We're too small to concernn them with the volumes they deal in.

perfect, knowing that the best horse is pulling the chariot makes me confident my R1 can reach new heigths!

not really into NAS or media player useage so great to hear the usb functionality doesnt affect me that much, the 2.4 wifi is also all i need and its speed is just fine too :)

and yeah more infos is the way to go id say, the lack of communication is what probably caused quite some uproars in this forum over the last year and gave Fraser some tough days lol

Haha you're too kind sir!

The lack of communication is not intentional. Just the amount of hours we had to put in last year was ridiculous. Needed to focus 100%. Writing a full stack OS was a serious endeavour!

But good news is we have our foundation! So the future is new features non stop and fully embracing our amazing community!

There's no need for the ping assist, a lot of ya'll wouldn't understand that because ya'll don't have the night hawk yet.

wait until i sneak into your CoD game running torrents all day long despite being 5km close to you :^)

the geo-filter is great, but ping assist and peer ping are even better!

Those features will be introduced don't worry!

Don't worry guys those features will be moved to advanced sections of the UI (if you have DumaOS you'll know what I mean, we have advanced draws) so new users don't get confused by them. But will be available to you veterans in upcoming firmware soon.

the peer ping is already in there.

But peer ping and ping assist serve two totally different purposes.  Ping assist is a filtering feature to restrict ping to host to a tolerable level.  Peer ping is a monitoring feature that shows why the guy next to you is warping all over the damn place with 100ms ping! lol  Nothing you can do about that but quit, it's just validation of what you're eyes are telling you about the lag once you are already in a game.

Ping assist is what assures YOUR lowest ping to the server or player host.  It is critically important, even more so than geo-filtering for "close games" which do not always guarantee low ping as Od1n pointed out.

So is preemptive and reactive not apart of it anymore? Also how much upload speed can the r1 hold so far I know download its 700 I believe but idk about upload

No there is no choosing between algorithms in DumaOS I'm unsure if that is something we'll be introducing or not. I believe the upload for the R1 should be about the same.

No you don't need preemptive or reactive in DumaOS it is just taken care of you.  I think the wired speeds for R1 is about 800mbits, and for Wi-FI just under 90mbits. But to get those max speeds all QoS is disabled on the r1 (super turbo mode).
