Major Announcement: Netduma partner with NETGEAR to launch the Nighthawk XR500 Gaming Router

I have not seen Iain or Fraser say that the Anti-Jitter/Anti-Spike feature is exclusive to the R1 yet people on here seem to have concluded that is the case ( see quoted posts below ). Just pointing out that the statements from the Netduma staff have been vague and in no way indicate exclusivity. I'm not suggesting anyone buy anything but based on what has been said in this thread people reading it would get inaccurate information based on users making their own assumptions.

True...but also they have not said that the Anti-Jitter/Anti-Spike IS NOT exclusive to the R1.

That was the whole point of my post, someone assumed it was only gonna be for the R1 and I just tried to let them know that may not be the case, again that's something that will be decided down the road between Netgear and Netduma.

Everyone will just have to wait and see what the future holds.

Wow how are you still missing the point. I just said that because multiple users were saying the feature was going to be exclusive to R1 when no one from Netduma has confirmed that to be true. You didn't correct all those users that had posts stating it was R1 exclusive and yet I made a statement opposite to theirs that could also end up being true but that is taking it too far so you had to correct it?

I'll try to explain it again. If someone was looking to buy a new router based on what has been said in this thread people looking for those kinds of features like Anti-Jitter/Anti-Spike would be led to believe it will only be available on the R1 because of posts made by users. Just saying if you are going to "correct" mine you need to correct all of them.

Although if it is exclusive my hats off to Netduma for scamming Netgear because that is a sweet deal.

From everything that's been said, it would seem that none of the features are exclusive to the R1 if Netgear wants them. It would seem that all features will be available to them, it's just a matter of what they choose to add and how long it takes for them to pass them through their QA.

That is exactly what I was alluding to with my first statement, nothing in the DumaOS is exclusive. Just because it isn't there at launch doesn't mean it won't be there.

Pretty much what I take from all is:

The R1 hardware will have access to the public beta features of DumaOS to test and get feedback on.

The XR500 will get what ever features Netgear wants to implement after they QC and test. Netgear has to make sure everything works and it doesn't break things that puts there Name at jeopardy.

Seems like the Netduma team is now just a software development team only working on DumaOS. Which might just allow Netgear who put out great hardware take care of the hardware part. This could be great partnership.

So I think I might be moving over to the XR500 and get all the stable updates after Netgear has approved of them.

Right now I'm trying to figure out whether to do XR500 or figure out how to set up an access point with my NetDuma. Wifi is a big problem right now in my house with wife and kids on their devices. Like I'll literally crash the wifi every night just streaming a couple youtube videos.

Wish I knew for sure that that gaming centric features will end up on the XR500

Forgive me if I am mistaken, but I thought Anti-Jitter/Anti-Spike was created to software compensate for a lack of hardware performance in the R1. I have had the XR500 for a few days now, and my connection is much more stable than it ever was for the 2 years I had the R1. Even with my girlfriend and her daughter on the network at the same time, I have a very flat ping 99% of the time. Games are butter smooth, on point hit detection, and no rubber banding. WiFi speeds also more than doubled in my home and at double the distance. It's a beast!

Why does the XR500 even need anti-jitter/anti-spike? Redundant?

Not quite, to my knowledge the reason Anti-Flood has algorithms is to compensate for the lack of hardware acceleration on the R1 which is why algorithms aren't used on the XR500. It will give it even better results that's why :)

I've found reading this thread very interesting. I have an R1 which I got when it first came out. Loved it on EE but when I moved to Plusnet despite help from the Duma team I just could not it get it working. As a result it has sat in a draw for a year. What I would like to know is if I am correct in thinking the following.... If I get the new Netgear router can I just remove the Plusnet router and plug it in and away I go? And if I change internet providers I just stick with the same router? This would stop having to fathom out the modem mode and all that jazz?

I can also understand people's frustrations being an early adopter myself but it is just a business at the end of the day and could be very good partnership.

Hope someone can reply. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Djimi - thanks for the kind words. To answer your question, you'll always need the modem because the XR500 is a router, not a modem/router combo (most routers you buy online are standalone routers).

But I think you'll be fine - Plusnet usually send a modem and a router. Is this true for you? If yes, your setup would be Plusnet modem -> XR500. If you just have one, you would set the Plusnet modem/router to modem mode. That should be easy to do, albeit it may not have been so before!

If you changed providers you would need to have a similar setup. Either we or NETGEAR will be very happy to help you if you have any trouble.

Thanks for reply. I've just got the Plusnet Hub One which I thought was just a router. I'm not even sure what a modem is. I've tried and failed to get the R1 working with it in the past which is why I gave up and it's been stuck in a draw ever since.

Will it be any easier with the new Netgear one as it's a rather expensive waste if not?

Is the Netgear one much better than the R1? I don't mind forking out the money as long as I can get it working.

Me again. Just a thought but you know you mentioned a modem. Would something like this help to replace by Plusnet Hub?

Many thanks.

Having a look it is just a router, so I don't know why you were not able to get the R1 working with it at all. The XR500 does have more individual settings and it automatically detects the network type and sets up accordingly. Obviously the hardware is beastly on the XR500 and DumaOS is fantastic and runs smooth too.

I don't think you would need a modem looking at the hub you have but some ISPs require their equipment to be used so I would first call and ask to find out if you can before purchasing a modem unnecessarily.

Thanks Fraser, I appreciate your response.

If I call Plusnet, what am I actually asking them? If I can use the Hub One as a modem only?

I just thought that as that modem was Netgear it might work well with the XR500 and if and when I change ISP I could keep the same equipment. Didn't think price was too bad but obviously if I can do without then brill.

First I would check the router itself and see if you can put it in modem mode or it has a DMZ function. If it does then you don't need to get a modem at all unless you really want to. If you don't see the option for modem mode or DMZ it may be that you can call and ask them to allow that modem mode on the hub. If not then you could ask if you're able to use 3rd party modems to replace the hub with your service.

Thanks for the help. I'm not really very tech savvy so struggle with all the PPPoE talk. When I last tried to set up the R1 I ended up at the stage whereby everything was going via the R1 but I couldn't connect to the wifi on it so I had to keep switching back to the default Plusnet Hub just to google a solution. After having to do this a few times it got very frustrating. It seemed so much easier on EE.

I was just hoping for £30 Netgear modem I could do away with the Plusnet Hub altogether and just buy a modem.

I'd recommend making a post for the R1 WiFi issue and we can help out. You definitely won't have a WiFi issue with the XR500. The initial setup is also much easier so you'd just need to enter the login details for PPPoE provided by Plusnet.

Is no one else excited about this?  Am I missing a thread somewhere or missing something?  In 11 days, we're getting the updated OS right?

Im pumped for this! my R1 is just sitting in a box right now because of some OS limitation/bug issues with the current OS and VPNs

CAN NOT WAIT!
