Finally Fiber coming to my area. Questions/Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Hello all, Just wanted to post a few questions and maybe some thoughts on a new Fiber service finally coming into my area for residential customers. This is a very local mom and pop company that got the job to update the 911 service in my area, they have been around for several years and a while back opened up to start taking residential customers. I have done a lot of thinking and believe using their service will be a great addition to our home. Currently have Comcast cable and internet with very subpar performance. We pay for 150/10-their blast service as they call it.

Questions:

                 (1) So with the above statement of our current 150/10 plan In your opinion what plan from the Fiber company should we choose?

(NOTE: We will be switching to a totally streaming household, using Netflix,Sling Tv,PS Vue, or something similar for the TV part of our entertainment)(We use multiple devices in our home with 4 Iphones , 3-4 Ipads, 3 PS 4's and an Xbox One as well as a

                       laptop from time to time)

They sell the following plans for Residential customers: 25/10

                                                                                                               50/15

100/25                             *With this said, I was thinking the 100/25

200/50                               or the 200/50 plan should suit us.

                                                                                                                500/75

                             Thoughts?                                                                  1000/100

                      (2)   The Fiber company installs into our home the Fiber to a connection box outside the home. Assume that I should just                                         connect to our NetDuma R1 and run our set up as I have been doing since we got our Duma.

                                                * Just making sure I shouldn't or wouldn't need to add another router to my setup.

                       (3) Should I then just reconfigure the input speeds of the new Internet service provider in my NetDuma? (Assume everything I                              have saved will still stay the same in the NetDuma) (Finally have things sorted pretty well as of now and don't want to start                              again as it was painful getting this far-Fingers crossed)

Any thoughts are very much appreciated!

Just want to sort the change over in my mind and wanted other opinions or concerns before we switch. looking for the switch to me made within the next few weeks.

If you're going to be changing to a 100% streaming household you should be at least 100/25.  If you're thinking you'll have 4k in your future I would go with the 200/50.  I'm not an expert on bandwidth, but if you skimp on bandwidth right before turning into a 100% streaming household you'll be sorry when you're gaming.  Everything on the Duma will be saved, but you'll need to update the ISP speeds to reflect the new services you're getting.

As far as your needing new equipment; would your new ISP be providing a modem or a modem/router combo?   If you have a choice, I would go with a modem only, then plug your Netduma to that and turn the netduma wifi off.  Buy a 5 port switch, plug that into one of your ports in the netduma with a cat 5 or 6 cable.  Connect all your gaming devices to the open ports on the switch or netduma. Then I would get a cheaper router with good wifi capabilities, plug it into the netduma with a cat 5 or 6 cable and place it in Access Point mode. You will use the cheap router for all your wifi and other devices.

modem>

                R1 >

                         -Your gaming console

                         -Gaming console

                         -Wifi router in AP mode>

all TV's Laptops and phones non gaming critical

                         -5 port switch >

any gaming device that isn't connected directly to the R1

Connect 5 port switch and wifi router to R1.  Connect gaming devices to 2 remaining ports of R1 or the 5 port switch. (Make sure your console is one of the ones plugged into the R1 not the switch, lol)  Use the wifi router for everything non gaming related.  You'll be able to use the wifi or the ports on the back of that router for your devices.

Don't take my word alone on the bandwidth matter.  If it were me, I would go with 200/50 if my budget allowed, but I could be way off.  You may want even more bandwidth depending on how the other people in your house use the internet.

Thanks, any suggestions for a WiFi router then. Brand would be great. Seems like I have the same thought as far as setup as posted.

Thinking of maybe powerline adapters for some of the rooms in the house also, thoughts?

Also, suggestions for brand of switch?

Thanks for any and all replies.

I use a powerline adapter in my home for 2 PS4's on a secondary router. Works a charm for me :)

Thanks for the post. was looking at the TP Link router for my additional router, not quite sure what one yet to choose though and also their powerline adapters.

Any thoughts on the TP link router?  Doing some more research on what model would be best yet for our home.

Maybe someone else could chime in - I can't give any recommendations myself. Avoiding all equipment with Puma 6 chipsets is always good advice though since they're absolutely broken (cause massive ping spikes etc.)

IMO Netgear makes a great line of routers, dual band and great WiFi range.I don't have any personal experience with the TP Link routers but I love their modems.

What model of TP Link were you looking at ?

I'm sure someone that owns or has owned a TP Link router will see this and give you some info.
