Getting sick and tired of the Netduma

I’m at breaking point with this router, constantly dropping WiFi and now it’s decided to completely disconnect me from the internet, no access what so ever. All I can do is muck around on the fancy settings page but no matter what I change according to the support threads helps.

 

Set up is a BT Smart Hub X (WiFi turned off and Netduma in DMZ) with the Duma connected as the only thing in the lan ports. Everything else runs through the Duma nothing else is connected to the smart hub.

Lets get to the bottom of it! First off, I believe on BT you'll require PPPoE. Please ensure you've entered your PPPoE details in the WAN settings on the Netduma, as these issues could well be caused by these details not being entered.

Does the Wi-Fi drop on all devices at the same time? What about wired devices? I'd recommend hard-resetting. (switch off the modem and Netduma. Wait for 5 minutes, then switch on the modem. Wait another minute before switching on the Netduma. Make sure the Netduma is fully booted before continuing).

After I gave up getting it to work, its decided to bring WiFi back on its own.

These are all my settings with it currently working, is there anything in here that i need to change to stop this from happening again? I understand technology isn't perfect so it may happen again regardless but I want to minimise the possibility seeing as im in the middle of writing my dissertation.

you could do with using a wifi channel sniffer to determine what wifi channels are being used in your local vacinity. 1, 7 & 11 are the main channels people use.. try channel 5 or 8 for example as cross channels can cause wifi drop outs!

 

uncheck dep packet processing if you dont intend on using it as it is very resource intensive.

 

Also your bt smarthub handles all the pppoe login details so they do not need going into the netduma unless you are connected to a dedicated modem (openreach modem for example rather than an all in 1 modem/router).

he does not need pppoe login as he is connected to a bt smarthub which dows all the pppoe handshaking automatically!

Your settings seem good - potentially give Wi-Fi Workaround a go in Settings > Miscellaneous. Please let us know if your Wi-Fi drops out constantly again and we'll potentially book a 1 on 1 (I'll get Fraser to take a look at this thread when he's not too busy).

I tried putting the login details into that box on the R1 when I first got it because I was new to BT and didn't know that it was already handled by the Smart Hub. I just assumed if you're on PPPoE, you have to set it up there to get a connection through to the second router

 

Needless to say I quickly lost connection and had to reset to factory defaults lol

 

I am planning on getting a standalone modem though, so without trying to shamelessly derail this thread... how do I find out which PPPoE sign in settings are for me? The general consensus is you use the BT broadband email thing but nobody can seem to agree on what the password should be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

@XIJMAW - try changing to channel 7 on the wifi setup page. That's the default and it seems to work best for me, although my laptop refuses to stay connected to the Netduma. Everything else connects just fine. If channel 7 doesn't help try ticking WiFi workaround in miscellaneous BEFORE trying another channel. If that doesn't work untick WiFi workaround then change to some other channel and repeat the above.

 

Apparently WiFi workaround works to beat channel congestion, so maybe it's an auto channel changer as you'd find on the Smart Hub (it's called Smart something lol)

WiFi just lasted a good 15 minutes this time until it dropped again. I seriously must be doing something wrong to keep having this issue.

I've only ever had issues with connecting my laptop to the Duma WiFi. Everything else connects and stays connected, whereas my laptop would see it at full signal and refuse to get online, or just say "secured" rather than connected. Sometimes it would connect first time and then drop out a few minutes later and refuse to connect again, or it would stay connected until I rebooted, and then it would refuse to connect again lol. I'm not sure exactly what fixed it because I changed my Duma WiFi channel to 4, enabled WiFi workaround (although it's stayed connected since then with it disabled), tweaked a McAfee firewall setting that I'm not entirely sure was even relevant, changed my password type to WPA and back to WPA2 again, and also followed a YouTube tutorial to prevent my power saving plan from allowing the laptop to tell the wireless adapter to go to sleep. I also made sure my ISP router WiFi was disabled.

 

Some of those are specific to the laptop only. Maybe try changing your password security type on the Netduma as well as the channel? Load up with GUI with your PC over a wired connection, disable WiFi fully first and click apply, then re-enable, choose password type WPA-PSK2, and type in your details again (Netduma R1 for the SSID and whatever password you were using before), before changing the channel to 4. Click apply, go to miscenallous, then check WiFi workaround and see if your devices will connect and remain connected.

WiFi has dropped another 2 times in the past day, there is nothing near the router at all, it’s literally on its own with at least a 6 foot radius away from any other electrical devices. Given up at this point, disconnected the Duma and just having standard BT Smart Hub.

The Hub and Duma aren't close to each other? Most people keep them together with a tiny cable but I've never tried keeping them near each other so even when I used both Hub and Duma WiFi simultaneously I never saw any congestion. Right now I've got my Duma upstairs connected via a 15m ethernet cable to my modem downstairs (although I've literally just ditched the Smart Hub; I replaced it with a new modem a few minutes ago) as usual and WiFi is still going strong, even for my laptop which never kept a connection before! Did you try manually changing to channel 4? Changing to other channels when I tried to work around this a few months ago never worked, but since changing to 4 this week I've not lost my wireless connection once.

cant really have the Smart Hub and the Netduma too far apart, cant run wires all over the house due to young children and dog. Smart Hubs WiFi is completely turned off though. Ran two network analyzers and both said channel 11 was best for me so been on that.

I wish I had something else to suggest mate. I've not heard of or seen issues with WiFi like that, other than my seemingly unexplainable laptop problem which doesn't appear to be a problem anymore lol sorry :(

No worries, I'm thinking about waiting it out until DumaOS and going from there.

Potentially daft question as you may have already done this in desperation, but have you tried resetting to factory default settings? I swear it runs better after an occasional reset lol

 

I hope DumaOS sorts out the GUI slowdown thing when you have the geofilter enabled with port forwarding!

Why don’t you use flat Ethernets? They can be run under carpets and are trip hazard free (or greatly reduce risks)
