Sudden WiFi issues

Recommended Posts

I was just on YouTube on my phone and noticed that videos would randomly buffer, so I checked my Netduma GUI to ensure the sliders were set to 100% (50 down 10 up); they were, so I went back to the video I was trying to watch and it wouldn't load up at all. I then tried to run a speed test and couldn't even connect to any servers.

I swapped back to my ISP modem/router's WiFi (BT Smart Hub), ran a test and managed to run it with no issues. Swapping back to my Netduma WiFi I could only start a test once in four attempts. I ran another test with the ISP router and then swapped immediately back to the Netduma, screenshotting my results in order to show the two tests were just 24 seconds apart...

I've never had any issues with my R1's WiFi before. It was last rebooted around 36 hours ago. Any idea what could be causing this?

Edit: I should add that, two hours later after a reboot, I'm running more tests putting my phone ON the R1 and seeing the same lol

Do you get full speeds when connected via ethernet?

Yeah I get normal numbers over ethernet still. Over WiFi it's currently fluctuating but download doesn't exceed 30Mb despite 100% sliders and my running tests with the phone on top of the R1

Maybe try using a channel analyser and switch to a less congested channel. Have you got any other wireless devices close to the Netduma that could be causing interference? Have you changed your setup / added anything new near the Netduma?

You could also try ticking WiFi workaround and rebooting.

No bud. Congestion Control rules are at default with 100% sliders and equal distribution on the flower.

Ok, I've had this happen myself before but I can't remember what was causing it now.

Try what Jack said, in case it's just a wifi channel clash or something. I'm guessing you've tried rebooting too.

Have you tried testing on your phone wifi and laptop too? I find the phone speedtest.net phone app works a lot better than their website.

I don't really have any issues with congestion in my area. I live in a street with only 12 houses lol. As I said the performance is usually flawless so I can't really understand the sudden drop in bandwidth (but not signal) when I'm not dropping speeds on the ISP modem/router.

And I'm actually using WiFi workaround right now. I'll disable it and see if anything changes.

If you recall what caused it feel free to gimme a shout haha

I was only testing on my phone mate. I've noticed the same too; doing stuff on my laptop has always given me wonky results. It often refuses to connect to the R1 WiFi too, something I never see with other devices. I'm gonna try unticking WiFi workaround to see if that helps.

Let us know how it goes; there's definitely something fishy going on. Maybe try switching algorithm as well - with 50mbps download, you're right on the edge of Reactive being preferable, so either one could potentially give better results.

I've tried preemptive, reactive, wifi workaround ticked and unticked, device prio at default (hit reset again) and 100% prio for the phone with share excess unticked, and I'm struggling to reach 30Mb out of my 50Mb down. I've even tried different WiFi channels and rebooted the R1 after all of that too. I'm stumped :(

Make a post in the 1 on 1 section with dates/times you're available this week and I can take a look. I need at least a days notice & I do have a 1 on 1 tomorrow at 3pm with someone else.

I just unticked WiFi workaround, went back to preemptive (still 100% sliders) and ran a test. I got 40Mb despite being at around 65% signal. I watched the network monitor while playing something on my Amazon Fire TV and it was using up to my full bandwidth at times.

I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if this issue pops up again.
