New ISP Router making NETDUMA as a Slave.

Recommended Posts

Hi Netduma

Firstly i thank you so much for creating an amazing product. i am using this for close to 2 years now and works like a charm and it will. But, i currently experiencing a problem My internet has recently been upgraded and my ISP provider(Telstra) has provided a new router so that it is compatible with our new NBN internet(Fibre) technology.

Current setup-- ISP router(Master)-->Netduma(Slave)--> Devices -- This setup works but ip address comes from ISP router ex: devices ip are 10.x.x.x.

I tried changing the isp router to bridge mode but the router is unable to get internet.Means it changes to bridge mode but there is no internet light flashing. I have requested my ISP provider to provide a new router. but i was thinking there may be some other way to fix this.

If there is any please let me know, because without Netduma i really hate to play COD online. the most annoying part is i am unable to login into Netduma router when it act as slave.Let me know if you need further details

Your help is much appreciated.

can you not place the fibre modem in "modem only mode"?   Also there is a work-around if you have a static ip address! is your ip address static or dynamic?

Also what make and model did they give you?

Yes the ISP router has Bridge mode function which will act as a modem only. But for some reason it is not working it doesn't have the internet when switches to "Modem mode". Which is why i got back to my ISP to provide me a new router. but there should be otherways to make ISP router as a slave or modem only.

i think it is static ip but i can check again. what can i do by knowing the ip as static?

Hi

Yesterday i did some configuration to my isp router and made that as a Secondary. But i have bizarre problem now. My netduma can identify my PC and my ISP router in the device manager but not my playstation any reason why.

Note: ISP router lan ip is changed to Netduma ip subnet and  disbaled the DHCP of the Netduma.

Thanks in Advance:)

I'm having similar problems. I've just signed up to FTTN NBN here in Oz and am forced to wedge the ISP modem/router between the NBN modem and the R1.

I'm having trouble connecting my existing LAN of 80+ devices, powered by the NetDuma to the Netcomm NF18ACV I was supplied by the ISP. I'm not setting all of the that up again, nor am I pulling the R1, so I'm a little bit lost as to what to do. The R1's network is 192.168.88.X, the router's is 192.168.20.X with a mask of 255.255.255.0 (also tested 255.255.0.0). I have DHCP disabled on the Netcomm router and added the R1 IP to the Netcomm's DMZ (it won't accept a MAC addy).

Whilst there is apparently a bridged mode for WAN, it's been disabled or overridden somewhere in the NF18ACV admin interface (maybe because it's an IPoE connection), so bridging isn't an obvious solution.

The router does offer a LAN VLAN setting and that looks to be setup correctly, to no avail. I have no idea how that's supposed to work, so no surprise there...

So the question is, how do I connect the R1 to an upstream router without changing my existing LAN settings? What do I need to punch into the WAN page on the R1?

Who is your ISP - Telstra?

i also read through your routers manual - that router seems like overkill to me. i can see 2 options

1 - put ur isp router to modem only.

2 - Router cascading - means lan- lan or lan - wan. do bit of youtube u will know how to do it. - i tried this unfortunately lan - lan dint work for me because i cannot change the Netduma lan Ip  ex: 10.0.0.1 or something else

Lan - Wan i have know freaking clue on how to do it because there is no WAN on Netduma but it has a option on web UI , im figuring out how to configure

Hi Team Netduma

Apparently i found the reason the ip address is assigned by my ISP router not Netduma R1 which is why the devices doesnt show up on device manager.

ISP router - 88.2

R1 router - 88.1

Still ISP router takes up the control of the R1 because the DHCP is enabled only on ISP. i tried vice versa but it doesnt work. im going to stop here and wait for my new telstra router to be delivered and give anouther try hopefully it get fixed. Telstra (ISP) also advised my router may be faulty which is why they are sending second router. fingers crossed.

Update you soon. TA

Can't bridge the ISP router, which is piss-poor. Wasn't a problem with Telstra cable. Interwebs speeds are awful too, about 1/6th of cable speed thus far and I'm paying for 100/40. Early days though...

Thanks for the router cascading suggestion. I've already setup a LAN to WAN cascade so my Duma retains control over the LAN, but it's not working. I'm guessing the missing link is what to put into the WAN page on the R1.

The ethernet cable is running from the WAN port on the R1 to a LAN port on the Netcomm router. The Netcomm is connected from its WAN port to the modem. I think this is the correct setup, all I want to the Netcomm to do is act as a pass-through if it can't be bridged.

I've entered the Netcomm's details as the WAN IP: 192.168.20.X, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.20.X, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which I would think is right. Disabling it and rebooting both routers achieves nothing.

Did you follow this, there is some clear instructions on how to do it

Wrong modem, but thanks anyway. While the NF18ACV is capable of being bridged, it doesn't work with an IPoE connection, which the NBN uses. I've tried already, it kills my internet.

Sorry m8 dint realise that,  then you might as well buy a generic VDSL/NBN modem from JB Hi Fi or Harvey norman.

Assuming I need to change the IP addy of the routers and go with LAN to LAN cascading, will the Netduma still control the LAN? i.e change Netcomm to 192.168.88.1 and R1 to 192.168.88.2.

I'm confident I'll get the internet working again going that route, but I want the DHCP and all QoS stuff to still pipe through the R1. That might be a problem with everything else on the LAN using 88.1 as the gateway and Primary DNS, which I'm assuming will bypass the R1, but setting it to 88.2 may not work at all.

So it looks like we're both having the same problem - how to connect the R1 to the ISP router without losing QoS and DHCP control in the process. Bridging doesn't look like an option for either of us, based on the OP.

I tried LAN - LAN  still dint work because the DHCP should be disabled on the R1 otherwise you wont get the internet working and ISP still treat Netduma as a slave and you wont able to control ur devices through netduma. That is where i am stuck now.

You talking about configuring both to 88.1 now i dont know if it is possible but give try, I am sure it will give a ipconflict but hey im not network engineer im just IT service analyst.

That was a typo, I meant 88.2 for the R1.

At least we're both sitting here twiddling our thumbs safe in the knowledge that we're not alone...

I dont think u can change the R1 to 88.2. Netduma kind of played with that i dont know Y. U can only change its 2 subnet which is '88'

I've wasted 5 hours on this, so I've bypassed the R1 for now and have set the Netcomm to 88.1 to avoid messing with the rest of the network.

Hopefully one of the Duma guys will present a solution

Thats awesome did u change R1 to 88.2 ?

Well im on this post for 3 days now i just got one response from one kind person and then you m8.

dont see why you cant ditch the ISP's issued router/modem and buy one yourself that you know you can configure?

if you have your authentication info from your account to input into the new router their network should not care as long as the capabilities are the same, unless it does some kind of make/model match and white-lists the connection based on that (though i doubt it; that'd be a rather big drain on the back end to poll all downstream devices for a model/make/bios rev to authenticate)

I can buy from the store i did some homework on this seems like the following will do the job. But man i am just being thrifty. Also telstra has sent me a new one so gonna try that if it doesnt work then probably have to buy the netgear.

I think I'm going to need to do that too @Mechcondrid, my ISP has confirmed that I can't bridge using their modem. I'm waiting to see if they can supply account auth info so I can use a third-party modem. There's a list here snailhawk - http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/nbn_router_guide, those supporting bridged mode are indicated with a .
