Extreme packet loss and extreme lag. please help me! :(

Recommended Posts

I've been having this problem for months now and I just can't figure out what the problem is.  I've confirmed that it's not my modem from my internet provider.

What could be causing this to my internet to lag like this?

They will NEVER blame their network or equipment so don't listen to them.

In your screenshot the interval is set too low. Change it to 1 second and see if it improves.

I did this, and nothing changes, same results, just take longer to get to since it's at 1 second.  Could this be a coaxial cable thing? like the signal is out of whack? I have rg59 coaxial cables and I don't think they have any shielding on it. I heard you should have rg6 quad shielded coaxial cables for the internet. My coaxial cables are like 15 years old.  I really just want this fixed.

I not saying this is your cause but I see you are pinging 8.8.8.8.  Try pinging another IP address. Honestly I had to change my dns from google's.  8.8.8.8 is a mess right now (I was getting packet loss out all over the place) so I started using 8.8.4.4 as my primary and 8.8.8.8 as my secondary.  But I have since changed to opendns and it works great for me on xbox.

Well in the picture I am also pinging a lot of other different ips at the same time. I am even pinging my default gateway 192.168.0.1. and receiving bunch of lag.

your gateway is having issues so your problem fixing should start at the gateway, as you have control over it. Already suggested is to change interval, i suggest 2.5 seconds as you gateway is not coping with it maybe you need to change your gateway, maybe this is the puma intel chipset at fault here as you have stated you got cable. have you recently upgraded your package over 200Mbps?and then noticed this problem?

my modem is a arris dg3270. I can't find anything online if it has a puma intel chipset  in it.  and I have 150mbps.

Well that's why you're seeing packet loss. When you ping more than one IP for some reason ping plotter goes crazy. Only do one at a time, I prefer to ping comcast.com but it depends on your location.

have you only noticed your problem since updating your package? I cant find nothing much on it to see if its puma based, but my gut instinct tells me it is. Try and borrow another modem that you know has a different chipset and test.

All those other ips in your pic are other servers.

hop 1 is your modem and has packet loss and ping spikes which you have control over

the next couple of hops down to hop 6 is your ISP your isp has control over this and if your problems started here then you would create a fault with your isp as its within their network.

the next lot of hops are outside your control and your isp's control, at this point you could make a complaint to the server yourself. but all your problems start with you modem/gateway.

the arris dg3270 has a intel atom core as the processer, that's the puma 6 chipset isn't it?  Because I saw the dg2470 has the puma 6 because of dlsreports has a track of which modems have the puma 6 in it and dg2470 has the same cpu as the dg3270. https://www.dslreports.com/testsearch?fy=1999&q=puma6&ty=2016&typ=hardware

I would assume dg3270 has the defected cpu then.

Here's the two modems to compare.

that's the dg2470 that is confirmed to have the puma 6.

Here's my modem.

the 2470 also sports the intel atom, i would go as far to say that this modem also has the puma chipset, and apparently all the puma family has the issue including puma 7. I would do some research and get your self another modem, then we will take a look at the rest of your issues if present.

The only other modem I can switch to at my isp is this one.

Is this a good one to fix my modem problem?

I personally wouldn't use it. Not only is it Arris, but it's an all in one modem/router which is gonna cause more problems with NAT and people bypassing the Netduma causing lag.

Who is your ISP? I never saw an ISP that can only use 1 modem lol

My isp is eastlink. I live in canada and most isp in canada don't even support buying a modem and there's only two modem choices to pick. and I have no problems with Nat.

Here are some example setups:

1( Modem >Netduma >devices (duma does NAT)

2( Modem/router(combo) >netduma>devices(modem/router does nat and duma does nat = double NAT) would require DMZ

3( Modem/router(set to modem mode only, if supported by your modem/router combo) >Netduma>devices (duma does nat only)

you may not have nat issues now but you could if you pick 2.

you need to go for number 1 or 3.

I also read that the puma chipsets only tend to be like this when you have high bandwidth so you could ask your ISP to lower your package to about 100Mbps or to what it was before you upgraded.

you need to go for number 1 or 3.
