Competition is heating up in the gaming router space!

Hi,

How is everyone doing today?  Since this off topic and or competition related I am hoping it is OK to post here.  I was wondering what NETDUMA and really everyone in this forum thinks about the competition that is heating up in the gaming router business.

First we have the

Asus Rog Rapture Wireless-AC5300 tri-band gaming router.  Seems to be built from the ground up with brand new UI as well for it.  Not the standard Asus UI for the rest of their routers that they use. <<https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/ROG-Rapture-GT-AC5300/

Recently announced and slated to release next month is the

Linksys WRT 32X Gaming router.  Another router that seems to be built from the ground up with very similar UI as to NETDUMA.  << https://www.multivu.com/players/English/7650553-linksys-wrt-32x-gaming-router/

These 2 routers to me same like NETDUMA truly seem to be built from the ground up for gaming from the hardware to software.

What are you're thoughts on competition NETDUMA?  What about the community what do you all think? Anyone here ever try out the ASUS ROG router?  I would not mind to test the router but very pricey!

Again this is specifically just for informative and fun discussion basis.  I have NETDUMA R1 router and use it, I don't have anything against the NETDUMA or any other company.  If discussion like this are not allowed especially in regards to competing companies please inform me.

Thank You

Hi Guardian, it's fine to have this kind of discussion so long as it's friendly :)

On the surface, these routers appear to be similar to what we are trying to achieve. Visually, they're attempting to entice gamers and make them believe that they hold a unique solution to gaming problems. Unfortunately I believe this only holds up on the surface level.

What we are attempting with DumaOS is to prove that strong visual appeal needs to be matched by a strong, intuitive feature set. The new Linksys router claims that their 'Killer Network' support will 'get you kills faster', which I don't believe is true. Other than that, the WRT32X has all the hallmarks of a family consumer router, just as the new Asus router has.

Asus made a couple of cool features that we'll think about for our future, though again I don't think the actual solutions are there. Our QoS is optimal for gaming, and they certainly don't have the functionality of the Geo-filter.

Visually, they're attempting to entice gamers and make them believe that they hold a unique solution to gaming problems. Unfortunately, as is the case with larger (and out of touch) companies, this only holds up on the surface level.

I love you guys taking the time to actually respond on this thread and in general with everything.  From my same old twitter posts in regards to DumaOS release, to providing quick responses on issues when they arise.  I will not lie and say that I haven't pulled out whats left of my hair from time to time due to R1. Overall though I am a happy camper with my R1 routers performance and looking forward to its bright future.

Thank You

Just from the quick glance I've had as well it appears the Linksys router requires you to have a Killer network card in your PC (may be wrong) to really make the most of the prioritisation feature - of the gaming PCs out there I imagine that only covers a small portion of gamers, what about consoles? Would be interested to see if the same performance could be achieved with non Killer enabled PC's/consoles - doesn't seem like it

I know i was thinking that too Fraser.....Same with the WTFast from Asus that supports 2-3 games and doesn't support consoles.  I haven't reached out to Linksys but I wonder if consoles could benefit even without the Killer enabled hardware.  That is just wishful thinking in me though lol.

on the gb page https://www.linksys.com/gb/p/P-WRT32X/ there is a little more to read and it talks about consoles being ideal in a lan party.

I did see that.  I was not sure if that is what they were recommending or if that is what they were trying to sell the 4-5 Ethernet port for in the back with the switch.  I believe it is just saying we have so many Ethernet ports and you can use them for these things....example LAN, Multiple consoles etc.

It is all marketing stuff. There is really no competing.

It's the design of the shell that makes me laugh, a plastic crown, a turtle equipped for medieval warfare, basically a body-kit on a car.

They might well be powerful routers but I wouldn't want to look at that monstrosity on the desk, if it would even fit on there.

I like shiny things as much as the next magpie but sleek and understated would be my preference.

It's clear what they think of gamers with that kind of subtle design.

IMO they can keep coming out with all the "gaming routers" they want but until someone with the mindset of the Netduma crew and the way they go about doing things, it will be Netduma...and everyone else in this market.

listen, most of those router mentioned by OP are the same exact routers that are already on the market today, just with a different coat of paint & a re skinned GUI and re-wording of the QOS system they have in place to entice gamers specifically.  They are not really building anything from the ground up towards gaming. Best piece of advice, save your money on those things as they are more or less gimmicks.Just to be clear , i am not talking or referring to the R1 only to those routers which OP has suggested as well as even the netgear nighthawk "gaming switch".. these things are no different from what is already available and do not do anything special that a simple router or switch can do. its merely a nicer "cooler" looking device with rgb Led's on them to make them considered "gaming" peripherals..

the linksys ac3200 has the EXACT same internals as the "Linksys WRT 32X Gaming router". yet they are pushing it for i believe $100 more..

the asus AC5300 is that expensive because of the real world wifi throughput it offers and is the reason the router is on the rather large size.. has nothing to do with gaming but looks pretty neat and has extensive wifi coverage. this is aimed at gamers because most casual gamers play video games over wifi and their product aims to be in the wifi coverage department with all sorts of edges and curves on it to make it look futuristic for gaming... none of these router will really do anything different than a $80 router in terms of ethernet performance(not talking about wifi performance, most certainly a router with more & powerful antennas could output stronger wifi signal) . Not to mention if their firmware isn't stable than your base ping could increase by a couple/few milliseconds just by using the router. im fine with the R1 since it adds no additional latency/jitter on top of the base ping directly from the modem. just use an ethernet switch if you need more ports.

cheers
