Doing some testing with ping plotter

Been awhile since I tested multiple settings with ping plotter. Just curious so while I was playing BO2 on XB1 and enjoying all that crazy visual lag and hacked lobbies you can expect when playing against 360 players I was running my ping plotter in the background.

Just for kicks I decided to test against modified CC settings.

One set over 10 -20 minutes with CC 70/70 reactive

Second test 10 - 20 minutes with CC 20/30 (down/up) Pre-emptive.

Used comcast to test against and even though my ping in most games tends to be from 10ms to 20ms according to duma, against comcast it seemed to average about 35ms.

The difference on both of those settings were similar without any major spikes that I could tell. The norm was about 32ms to 37ms fluctuation with an occasional 40 - 45 ms jump. With these tests I only think I saw one larger spike above 45 which jumped to about 50ms over about 30min to 40min of testing.

Curious on what types of spikes others see during their test. Got me think too, is the 70/70 cc Reactive really necessary. At least with ping results on ping plotter, I seem to have the same amount of spikes when dialed all the way down to 20/30 and ping doesn't change.

Would love to know if there is a way to reduce that 32ms to 37ms jump or maybe even the more rare sporadic spikes going up to 45ms or with those ranges should I not really see much difference in game? That seems pretty consistent but than again, I have nothing to compare that too.

If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll plot a graph if you want something to compare too.

70/70 and 20/30 should show more or less identical results, the only difference should be that you have much less bandwidth to play with at the lower setting.

Not sure what you mean about it being necessary. By lowering it beyond 70/70 you're going the wrong way to test if it's necessary.

You need to go higher to test that and you'd need to have something else hitting the network. I tested mine with a device streaming Youtube as, relative to my bandwidth, that hits the network quite hard. Then you'll see when you hit the limit.

You'll probably be able to push it a bit higher I expect, I can run mine at 80/80 without any problems.

Gotcha, makes sense. I did it in part cause I was interested to see if there were spikes during game play between the lower or higher settings. I am probably in a unique situation where I am the only one using the line and it is unlikely I would be doing something that would hit it hard while gaming at the same time but I suppose streaming youtube might be a possibility. Maybe I will add that to stress test it next time.

The only variable I can't control is neighborhood traffic since it is cable I suppose the congestion or potential bottleneck there could cause problems but not much I can do about that, right.

Yeah, if you have anything to post, that would be interesting to see other peoples results. Obviously, don't go out of your way to do but if you happen to have one to throw up, would love to see it.

Next round I will test it against higher settings to see if the consistency holds up.

Thanks

If you're the only one then it doesn't really matter if you set them higher or lower - nobody will get upset that you just crushed their Netflix  :D

It depends what you're doing though, if you want to download to or upload from your laptop or run updates on another device then you'll want the congestion lower (70/70) but if you're just going to have the odd email get pushed through to your phone then you wouldn't need to.

I'd still leave it around 70% or 80% while gaming though just to cover yourself.

Nothing much you can do about the neighbours, unless you want to go snipping their cables

It's no bother, the testing part isn't a problem, it's whether I get a chance to play any Xbox tomorrow that's the issue.

What would you like to see?

Just my line while gaming at 70/70% compared to about 25/25%?

Or do you want to see the line whilst I'm gaming and stressing the network at the same time?

Because 70/70 gives you the maximum bandwidth for other users on your network before the pings would spike higher when the BB is in heavy use.

So setting it lower all you are seeing is lower bandwidth for the rest of the users on the network.
