VIRGIN Media’s Super Hub 2 could be at risk of being hacked according to consumer group Which?, whose ethical hackers were able to gain access to passwords in just four days.

The media company has advised some 800,000 users to change their passwords, but how do you go about it? Here’s the lowdown…

Why do I need to change my Virgin Media Super Hub 2 password?

While undertaking an investigation to see whether popular smart gadgets and home appliances are vulnerable to hackers, Which? discovered that hackers were able to access Super Hub 2 wifi passwords in just a few days.

A spokesperson for the firm told The Sun Online: “The security of our network and of our customers is of paramount importance to us.”

And they suggest changing the passwords on routers, if they are still set to the original password that the router came pre-set with.

Virgin Media have assured customers that the threat to their information is small, but advise to air on the side of caution.

How do I change my Virgin Media Super Hub 2 password?

If your password is still the generic default one that came with the Super Hub 2, then Virgin Media suggest that you change it to a unique combination of at least 12 characters.

These should include a mix of upper and lower case letters as well as numbers.

In order to change your password there are several steps to undertake.

 

  • Connect your computer up to the Super Hub using an Ethernet cable
  • Access the settings page by going to the web address printed on the back of the hub
  • Click Wireless Network Settings
  • Enter the new password into the Passphrase box (be aware that there are different options for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wireless networks, so pay attention to which one you have)
  • Click Save Settings and close the browser- all devices attached to the wifi will now be disconnected
  • Restart all your computers and devices and connect them using your new password

What are Virgin Media doing to deal with the hacking threat?

Which?’s testing found that eight out of 15 products had security flaws and the company have contacted the companies of the other devices effected.

Virgin Media told The Sun Online: “We continually upgrade our systems and equipment to ensure that we meet all current industry standards.

They added: “To the extent that technology allows this to be done, we regularly support our customers through advice and updates and offer them the chance to upgrade to a Hub 3.0 which contains additional security provisions.”

it's sensationalist journalism as usual, the chances of you getting hacked are very low....... most isp routers are the same, 99% of routers in homes are using default passwords. isp's cannot take all the blame customers should take their security more seriously.

your superhub 2 password is different to your wifi password yet the text to change the password under the above quote is for the wifi passwords which are unique to each router and not generic. it's the superhub admin password that is the same on all hubs that needs changing because it's generic admin/changeme, but so are sky's, which is admin/sky, talk talk state some routers they distribute dont even have a password so just put admin as username and nothing for the password but there is nothing about other isp's and what they are doing to stop the hacking of easy generic passwords.

 

i always change all passwords and i tell everyone i know to do the same.....

Mostly not all know how to change there passwords for there router like myself and many others that are tech minded.
