help to optimize router configuration for straeming, torrent download and web browsing!

Recommended Posts

Hi. Can someone help me to optimize router configuration for straeming, torrent download and web browsing? I'm not interested in games. My connection is 100mbps but the performance is not good, sometimes I have a lot of lag when browsing or downloading files and I want to know how I can optimize it to avoid lag.

Thks

First I would optimize the setting by these suggestions:

Have you tried out these settings?:

- If less than 50mbps, Pre-emptive Algorithm. If more, Reactive Algorithm

- 100% anti-flood

- Share excess enabled

- Reset device prioritisation & apply

- Disable IPv6 in WAN, LAN & misc (Unless you know that you are on IPv6)

- Disable deep packet in misc

- Enable turbo mode if over 120mbps

- Enable super turbo mode if over 300mbps

- Ensure the ethernet cables you're using connecting the R1 to hub & R1 to PC are Cat5e+/can handle your speeds.

- Do a wired speed test from a PC

Then manage your network congestion by using congestion control on the R1 and www.dslreports.com

I would get your max speeds first by following the above settings. Then I would start with 70/70 anti-flood, do not put your PC into hyper traffic as it is only meant for low latency traffic. ALL devices need to be connected to the R1 for congestion control to work correctly.

Yes, I connect most devices directly to Netduma R1 (laptop, smart tv, nas, AP wifi) all the others connected by wifi. (It's a shame that Netduma r1 does not have 5Ghz wifi) I have an AP with 5Ghz wifi for this that assigns each client as gateway the Netduma r1 router.

I'm going to follow your advice. Is there an on-line manual explaining each configuration option?

@PharmDawgg a couple of questions...

I have 100mbps download but 5mbps upload, What should I use? Pre-emptive or Reactive?

How do I put anti-flood to 100%? Congestion control -> Anti-flood -> download cap and upload cap option?

These are my active Miscellaneous options, should I deactivate or activate another any options? or It's okay like this?

Allow auto feedback(no personal data ever) to help improve the R1. ON
Allow remote access to Netduma tech support. ON
Enable upnp forwarding. ON
Enable multicast snooping. ON
Turbo mode. ON

Geo-filter only work with games?

Should I select some type of profile? like non-gaming for example (i never use for games, only straeming, torrent download and web browsing!)

Wich is the "host number" function in DHCP Lease?

Allow auto feedback(no personal data ever) to help improve the R1. -- Unselect or Select Doesn't matter
Allow remote access to Netduma tech support. -- Unselect unless you require Netduma to access your router
Enable upnp forwarding. Unselect unless your R1 is in a dmz
Enable multicast snooping. Unselect unless you have a media server - I leave mine enable because I have a NAS that I stream movies from.
Turbo mode. Unselect unless you are needing speeds of around 300Mbps

Yes geofilter only works with games currently.
You don't have to select a profile.  There is not a specific one for streaming.  I don't use profiles. You can use them and judge for yourself.
The last digits are the host number. For ex. 192.168.88.100 ( 100 is the host number)

No problem. Fellow gamers helping fellow gamers. Peace.

Yeaaaah! But, I'm not a gamer. I am something more like a moviegoer... but I like the advantages of this rotuer to help my internet connection.

another question. If I want to give priority to my pc over my nas server (which has Transmission to download torrent). With giving you 1 point more priority is enough?

Glad to hear Pharm has helped you out. With share excess on any device that needs extra bandwidth can grab it from devices that aren't using as much. If you want to limit each device specifically then you could un tick share excess and prioritise each device manually but they'd only be able to get that much, if they needed more they wouldn't get it.

Ok. Default prioriti is 7? Because all the devices have the same number 7. If I want to give more priority to a device (Above the other devices) I have to lower the level to 5 for example. Right?

It's a percentage out of 100 so it will change depending on how many devices you have connected, they'll all be given an equal share but as said with share excess on can get more if needed. You would give it a higher number so it has more bandwidth available.

Entiendo. I have 15 devices (3 tableta, 1 phone, 2 laptops, 1 pc, 1 nas, etc) 7% to each device. But if a device requires more bandwidth, it is automatically assigned. Right? it's better that way? Or should you allocate more percentage to the devices that use the most bandwidth? For example, I have an Smart air conditioner split connected that does not need much bandwidth, should allocate 1% and distribute the rest with other Devices? Like Nas, laptop, pc and tablets? understand what I say? F*ck... en Español lo explico mejor.

If you have share excess on then yes it could get more if other devices aren't using it. That's the way I usually have it myself, I don't want to be restricting any devices unnecessarily. You could do that yes and leave share excess on just in case.

Ok!

Última pregunta. In the manual says I should use Reactive algorithm if I have 100 mbps or more. But in my case I only have 100 mbps to download. But I have only 5 mbps to upload. Is it okay to use the Reactive algorithm? Or should I use Preemptive?

Hola amigo. Bienvenido al foro de Netduma!!!!

Gracias! Estoy aprendiendo a usar el router. Muy bueno por ahora, mejoró muchísimo mi conexión a Internet y eso q no lo uso para juegos. Muchas de las funciones q tiene Netduma me permiten tener más control de lo que pasa en mi conexión.
