Why does my R1 randomly think I'm in Europe?

Recommended Posts

Overall, the router works like a charm for NHL 17 which is a P2P game... but every hour or so, I suddenly start getting matched with European opponents despite being located in Toronto, Canada.

The only remedy is to turn off geolocation, turn off strict mode, restart my console and re-enable those settings once I'm back in the game.

Certainly an inconvenience and time wasting effort that I'd like to avoid if possible.

FWIW - under misc settings, I have autocloud on, but bleeding edge off... the description of bleeding edge worried me, since NHL was never formally confirmed as being setup for geolocation.

Also, something else I've noticed is that upon adding a host to the "deny" list post-game, I often get re-matched up with them again shortly thereafter... does it take a specific amount of time for those configurations to begin to "work"?

I am curious about this too. We use a tracking app on my wife's phone, as she travels frequently, and today it suddenly said she had left the house  when she was sitting in the same room. I looked at the tracking app and it said she was suddenly transported to Netduma HQ's address in Luton (we live in Iowa in the USA). I rebooted the router and it fixed it for awhile. Happily it has only been her phone so far and not my ps4.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

1: Do have bleeding edge ticked. Bleeding edge is very stable at the moment and the most up to date version.

2: Try turning Ping Assist to 0 and keeping Strict Mode on, that way you should never be connecting to European hosts.

This seems like a really weird issue. There's no specific reason we know of why this would happen. The only hypotheses we can come to are very unlikely, since the Netduma isn't really capable of tracking our Luton address, never mind giving false readings on your tracking app. Please let us know if this happens again :)

It is really strange, as it just started out of nowhere yesterday. The only reason I said it was Netduma HQ was that I recognized the address since I had shipped an r1 back to you a few weeks ago.

I attached a screenshot of how it was listed in the tracking app.

The mystery deepens though as according to the app she spent overnight in Chatham-Kent Ontario Canada, in the middle of a lake. It is, thankfully, still only her phone that is having the issue.

I'll let you know if I ever figure it out. I think I'll talk to Project Fi support next (our cellular provider) and see if they can help since it seems to be a phone only issue so far.

Thanks for the suggestions Jack, I'll try those and changes and let you know what happens.

For my own curiosity, is there are more in-depth info on what the "cloud" settings are all about?

Cheers

Our cloud contains information regarding hosts / servers for each game, and where they are located. We can use it to make sure dedicated servers / hosts are correctly placed on the Geo-filter map, as well as making sure you can always connect to certain dedicated servers.

Since there's a ridiculous amount of games / servers out there - including ones for in-game chat / matchmaking / background connections, we've always got to keep on top of it with cloud updates. Bleeding edge is always the most current version, but is also the least tested.

Ah ok, thanks for the info Jack.

Unfortunately your previous suggestion didn't change things at all.

Below is a screenshot of my geolocation page when the issue arises... usually, that padlock image is on the west coast of the states, which is where one of EA's servers is located... I believe they have another one in Ireland, which is likely what this padlock is representing.

Any other insights/suggestions?

Put your ping assist on just in case there is a mislocated host

Jack suggested to remove it.

In any case, I had it set to 25ms and 30ms with bleeding edge off, before reporting this issue in this thread.

I'll try it back on with bleeding edge on as well.

Hi Fraser, Jack

To confirm, the following configurations have been unsuccessful - approx 1hr into gaming, I get re-routed to all Euro hosts.

On the bright side, I've found that turning off geo-location and just closing/re-opening NHL 17 remedies it, so that's slightly faster than a full PS4 reboot.

- Ping assist 0, Strict, Bleeding Edge on

- Ping assist 0, Strict, Bleeding Edge off

- Ping assist 25, Strict, Bleeding Edge on

- Ping assists 25, Strict, Bleeding Edge off

What does that grey padlock represent?

Is the R1 having a conversation with the EA servers that eventually leads me to being soft-banned, or something along those lines?

Happy to try any other configuration changes that might solve this.

Cheers

The grey padlock represents a dedicated server that has been blocked. I shouldn't think the one in Ireland is mis-located since several games have a dedicated server based in Ireland.

Are you playing the game at a specific time when this happens? Maybe at certain times the game tries to connect you to Europe due to the multiplayer population at that time. (You won't get banned for using the Netduma, on a side note).

It could also be because of the game net-code. How long have you waited to try and get a game once it starts trying to connect to Europe, or can't you connect at all?

I've experienced the issue at all times of day.

I'm very confident it's not a user-population issue, because as quickly as I can reboot the game, I can get matched with countless opponents within my geo filter.

The issue generally appears after approx 1-1.5hr of game time.  Once it flairs up, it never goes back to matching me with local opponents, it just keeps showing the padlock, and then a yellow exclamation mark on whatever dude in Europe it tried to match me with

Could you get the IDs of the padlock and exclamation mark when that happens please and I'll look into it.

No problem

Westcoast USA padlock ID ac9fecb73c4b9499

European padlock ID 859f713c3c249499

The first European exclamation mark to show up had the ID of 5b50a46fedfad4d9

Okay both padlocks are supposed to be Ireland. Just before it starts trying to connect you to Europe do you get a game within your radius that has a high ping?

No I wouldn't say so.

Generally speaking I play ~3 games without issue, but then once this issue arises I cannot find a match at all as I watch the padlocks show up and then some random yellow exclamation marks popping up on the P2P European hosts that are outside of my range.

I cannot find another match-up unless I disable the geo-filter, and then I get matched with a European guy and the in-game ping indicator shows poor connection so I obviously don't play.

I then leave the filter off, shut down and relaunch the game, and re-enable the filter once the game is fully loaded... then I'm back in good shape for ~3 games.

Edit - tonight, I can't even load an initial game.  Straight to padlocks... I've been idling online without the geofilter on for a few hours, then just flipped it on and tried to find a game with no luck.

Also, new padlock ID on westcoast USA today: ac9fdca73c4b9499

Europe padlock ID is the same as yesterday.
