NordVPN Open VPN Config setup with Netduma

Recommended Posts

as of today its illegal in europe to stream copyrighted content, the EU court has made it pretty clear in the case of the dutch "Filmspeler"

before, in most countries this was still legal as the RAM of your PC didnt count towards an actual piracy copy

anyway, more than ever it now makes sense to look into VPNs

my question now is how do i set it up for the R1 so all my devices are secure as long as they are connected to the R1?

from my understanding it requires an Open VPN Config, the VPN im looking for "NordVPN" does offer that so it should work with the Netduma right?

see here: https://nordvpn.com/ovpn/

also incase you are also on the fence of switching, here is a 70% off voucher for NordVPN "HOTNORD"

any1 mind helping me on setting it up? :)

just an understanding question:

when i download eg the Open VPN "de121.nordvpn.com.tcp443.ovpn" im surfing with the german server 121 right? (DE stands for Germany)

or likewise with "ca19.nordvpn.com.tcp443.ovpn" for the canadian 19 server

is there anything to look out for when choosing a server?

otherwise i would just pick one that is within my country to keep the ping reasonable

no probs and hope you get sorted. :) Remember to click the devices you want protecting in vpn and when ready connect to vpn. Netduma will only protect those that are ticked. Also note that running through a vpn will dramatically reduce your speeds due to the extra encryption and multiple routing vpn uses.

just choose a server you want to use. The config file if it is the same as mine is identicle for all servers and all you should need to do is change the server address in that file. make a list of all the server address you wish to use and just manually change them when using a different server.....word of advice do not game with a vpn as you will get a lot of lag due to the vpn routing.

yes it works, thanks for your tutorial :)

there are two questions left that i have

1) what are the Netduma exceptions for?

theres - source engine games - Streaming (rtmp) - Google Services/Youtube

2) is an Open VPN Config slower than using the VPN provider software?

with Netduma Open VPN: 50% downloadspeed 90% upload speed +11ms more ping

with VPN provider software: 95% downloadspeed 95% uploadspeed +11ms more ping

also NordVPN offers a free trial with no payment at all for 3 days incase someone wants to check it out

in the tests it has the fastest network

1.

i think it is for bypassing the vpn (but that is only my guess as I use pia's software on my pc if i need a vpn).

2.

It is not a question of which is faster or slower. It is because the data you are sending through a vpn has to be encrypted  which slows things down and is detrimental to gaming as that causes delay and therefor lag. so using the software or direct connection via openvpn config has the same outcome.

Not true... running the software on your device will be faster and more than likely give you 100% speeds. The CPU on the router isn't fast enough for more than about 11Mbps.

First, thanks for that... I'm on PIA which I have no issues with but I'd be open to trying nord since they have good reviews too.

Second, if you're running through the Netduma make sure you change your DNS servers on the router to VPN provided one or use a 3rd party like google or PIA's DNS because the Netduma does not give your VPN'd devices a DNS and your ISP can see that..

Check that you're not leaking anything by going to https://ipleak.net/

yes thats what i thought too and this seems to be the case

NordVPN uses a very heavy encryption, from what ive researched its higher than on other services

my download with the Netduma CPU is only 50% while with my PC VPN software i pretty much reach 100%

i doubt the new DumaOS can fix that, but for most devices half the speed is actually fine

and those that need more are covered by all the NordVPN app solutions that you can install on them

thanks didnt know that

just tested it and yes theres a DNS leak when using the Netduma Open VPN, with googles DNS im save though :)

will research the NordVPN DNS numbers tomorrow then

as for the NordVPN software itself theres no leak, they have their own DNS servers that the software will use

tested it with your site and no DNS leak :)

haha no way id ever trust google in terms of secure data useage :)

i just used their dns to test for the leak (the only dns i know without having to research one)

tomorrow ill look for the VPN provider DNS :)

one last thing, if i try the PIA DNS the ipleak.net site shows two IPs in the "Your IP adresses - WebRTC detection" with one of them being my Netduma local IP (eg 192.168.88.50)

is that considered to be bad?

with the NordVPN software on my PC that isnt the case

I stand corrected!    :)

That's your browser leaking that. You can disable webrtc without any side effects

Great to hear you have the VPN working. Exceptions are so you can protect your PC but for applications where you need full speed you can put them through as an exception. E.g. PC VPN protected but your Twitch stream doesn't go through the VPN. That way it's not subject to any additional latency & if someone attempts to get your IP from Skype for example and hit you off they'll hit off the VPN and your stream will stay online.

Yes it would be, due to hardware limitation I believe it's limited to around 10mbps. You'll always have additional ping when using a VPN, the only way around that is to choose the closest possible server to your location

any special settings in the R1 to achieve that such as boost mode?

right now i can only get around 5mbits with the VPN but i do not use any of the boost modes :)

If you're setup for 100% speeds then theres nothing else you're able to do as it's a hardware limitation. You should have enough bandwidth to stream though

all right not an issue, the devices that require hithger speeds are covered by VPN apps you can install on them :)

just thought i might have not properly setup the R1 as the max i achive with Open VPN is 5mbits instead of 10
