Why did you purchase the Netduma router?

I see, and know of a lot of people who have bought this router, and aren't happy with the result's they're seeing. So I wanted to post this thread, and see what exactly people expected this router to do, and why they're not happy currently. Because I honestly feel like a lot of customers of the "Netduma" router are a bit mislead in what they think this router will do, and expect from it.

So this will be a discussion type thread, and I'm sure there will be disagreement's. However I want everyone to be open minded as possible, and not take another person's opinion, PERSONAL. So I don't want this thread to turn into personal shots taken at one another, so be respectful to one another, and understand we will not always agree with one another, but there's no need to attack each other. We all have ONE common goal here, and that's improved online gaming. With all this said, if this thread does turn into personal attack's on one another, I will have it closed, and removed by a moderator.

Let the discussion begin....

I agree, plus in the forum there are many questions about how to set it up (i mean basic questions) without understanding the basics of network configuration. They expect it to be plug n play when it is not that simple but on the other hand you do not need to have  stephen hawkins intelligence in order to get going.

I bought it for the gaming geo filtering and the simplicity of the GUI and qos sliders. I love my netduma and would not be without it.

Pretty much the same for me as Bagsta say's, Didn't watch any YT videos other than one from Sim, and that sort of made my mind up for me.

It does what it says on the tin, and helps you select your region you wish to connect to.

Unfortunately it can't fix all the other variables you now get in gaming :)

Well here's one thing I think a lot of people who bought this router expected. As a lot of them are FPS players, mainly COD in general. They expected to go from "Okay" lobbies, to "Great" connection lobbies. The reality is though, the Netduma will only help you in connecting to lobbies(dedicated servers) in which have as low as possible ping/latency each time. However the Netduma has ZERO control on the other player's that are connected to the same server. Plus with a game like COD, they also use "Lag Comp" still. So honestly a large part of the time, the lowest ping/latency players are at a bit of a disadvantage in most lobbies.

There isn't a one all, fix all to these type issues. But there's ways to improve things, most of it has to be done networking side, by the game developers. As only they can make it where there are limit's, in which they can set ping/latency limits that can keep certain players from being able to play on certain servers, and such. But there's a negative to this, but just because certain players have horrible connections, others shouldn't suffer because of them.

A router like the netduma with some of the features it offers, and hopefully is improved upon in the very near future with DumaOS. Are still key to have/use for people who game at home often, and want to enjoy playing online. Having things like a Geo-Filter, and a QoS system in which can control both download, and upload bandwidth, on a per device bases is key. I will honestly say having solid QoS system, properly configured is VERY key imho.

Not all QoS system's work as they should. Reason I say this, is just because you have say 100/10 internet connection. You don't want to be near maxing either download/upload limit. It's honestly key, when using a QoS system to have your limit's at like 75%, maybe even a bit lower, then what you pay for by your internet provider. Because when you near your bandwidth limit's, you greatly increase your overall ping/latency(jitter) while that bandwidth is in use.

Now back to not all QoS systems working as they should, well some QoS systems will let you set your download/upload limits. However let the lowest priority devices still use damn near the max bandwidth you have set as your limit. Which when a higher priority device request bandwidth, is supposed to be granted the bandwidth it needs, and lower priority device suffers. But this isn't always the case, and not all QoS systems work like intended. So it's important to keep your overall limit's a good bit lower then what you pay for by your provider. Because jitter becomes a real problem, when you start pushing 70-75% usage on your overall total bandwidth. One other thing, regarding some QoS systems I have seen in the past/used even. They don't handle well when wireless devices are in use, as they don't rate limit control like they should, and even priorities at times are not respected as they should.

So it's important to maintain your home network as much as possible with a solid working QoS in place. One other thing that's something outside most of our control, and I'm sure the reason some of you have purchased this router, expecting it to help/fix problems for you. That's internet issue's between the place you live, the internet modem you're using, the home's wiring, and wiring issue's in the area you live in. Which the last part would be on the ISP to fix, but is your responsibility to report to the ISP of problems with your internet. This type of stuff, there's no router out there that can help fix. You have to stay on your ISP about these type issues until they resolve them, before your quality of service ever improves.

Finally with everything I typed above, I think to many people buy a router like the Netduma. Then expect instantly they're gonna turn into the terminator, and no one should be able to kill them online, be able to get killstreak, after killstreak, and be unstoppable. Fact of the matter is.. None of us are that great, quit letting your ego play tricks on you, it's not healthy my friend. if you think you are, you're living in fantasy land. Try enjoying games a bit more, and not expect to drop 25 killstreaks every game. You will end up nothing more then disappointed, likely grumpy, and a person not many people want to play with, due to you being angry all the time.

The only feature that made me purchase the Netduma is the geo filter because i have never seen such a feature in any other router. It gives you complete control over matchmaking which cannot be done by any other router. Other features are cool too and User Interface is very simple. This is my first gaming router and im pretty happy with it. It exceeded my expectations.

I purchased it because I know nothing about networking, routers or computers and xXxQuICkSc0p3zxXx360xXx made a youtube video about how throttling my connection will make me aim better on my N64 playing golden eye.

P.S. Nice to see you back on here again

Did it help?

I bet you played as Oddjob - he was half the target the others were

I got the Netduma because my old router went to silicon heaven. I liked the features on the Netduma, particularly the Geo filter, hyper, congestion, so I bought it.

A big part of the problem lies in that most people think having a great connection means they will dominate. And they consider a 'great lobby' is one in which they will wreck the opposition. But then as soon as they get smashed by an opponent, "my Netduma doesn't work". Obviously this isn't a problem with the router, it isn't a problem with the game (usually), it's more often just a problem with what is sitting in front of the console.

They get themselves set up properly (sometimes) and jump straight into a game, rampage across the map thinking they're invincible, and they get served a triple-helping of smackdown. Then they come in here and say it doesn't work when actually it's working perfectly, it's suppressing their local congestion, keeping their ping buttery smooth, and geo filtering them exactly as it's supposed to.

The youtube 'proof' clips sometimes reveal a problem but usually they're just evidence of Rambo no-thumbs.

There are plenty of support threads in here where people have said, in all seriousness, "It doesn't work, I can't get gameplays like I see on youtube". It's quite funny but also disturbing that it doesn't even cross their minds that ability is more than a small factor.

And then there are people that have a 'rat-eaten' line to their house, which really does suck for anyone to have to deal with (used to be me too), where the isp needs to step in. The Netduma obviously can't resolve this but sometimes people don't know that there is a problem until they raise it in here and it's pretty awesome that we have a community of knowledgeable users that will look into their modem stats to advise.

But people shouldn't think that buying a new router will fix an isp problem, it doesn't make sense. If you put toilet-water in your kettle your tea is going to taste weird.

I've not had the best success with the geo-filter. not the filters fault it keeps games local but I honestly think most of the connections in the UK (where I'm from) are trash I get more lag from uk players than USA folks there is so many people with 800+ ping again this is due to potato connections on the other players side.

The other main feature I needed it for was congestion control I've been going from router to router since netflix / iphones became a must for the family wen't from belkin to netgear to asus and the all failed me. honestly the netduma is the only router with a qos system that has worked for me

Aim better HA!!! Anyway I saw what it could do on youtube I don't remember who I watched... Maybe Maximillain more than likely but anyway yeah im always gaming so I said fuck it why not buy a good router for gaming & Im happy I did so now the only thing thats kinda shit is not every game is compatible with it so sometimes I just have to typically just use congestion control which is still pretty good but I know its the game itself thats the problem not the router & even if it was I could get help with whatever problem I have in the forums :)

Bought mine to fix CoD...

Worked pretty well, BOps3 plays so much better and IW plays a fair bit better but as we all know, alot of the problems with IW are their end.

Also, had a problem with the wifi dropping out alot and that hasn't happened once since getting the Duma so happy about that too :D

Also, watching Sims videos convinced me to buy ;)

I was on the Activision call of duty web site when I read a thread where two members were speaking about the Netduma, I thought wow what is this, Googled it, watched the video's and scrambled to the site to order.

I told my son" look at what I have just ordered" and showed him the features and he said "yeah right that's bull, it cant do that".

I plugged it in and set it up and it does exactly what I had expected, I have not had an argument about who is lagging who ever since and I had tried many routers and Qos before.

I bought the R1 for the Geo-filter and ability to see pings to servers and players in COD.

I felt like COD was putting me in lobbies much further away from my physical location, which in turn increased my ping to the server.

The Geo-filter allowed me to see that that wasn't the case. It showed that the servers around me are straight garbage.

So I used the Geo-filter to move my home location and find stable servers.

The features of this router shed a lot of light into how networking worked and where I should look to solve problems.

So it may not have made me a beast in COD but it did help me fix some major network issues that my house and street had with Comcast.

I was also pleasantly surprised at how well the Congestion Control feature works.

I look forward to the upcoming Duma OS.

I purchased it because I was tired of getting connected to servers and people half way across the country, and I knew this was happening after watching a bunch of videos on the duma and was proven correct when I got it and used it without the GF on to see where I ended up...I live in Michigan but usually connected to the west coast...SMH

But the other reason was for the CC as I thought that feature alone was well worth the purchase all by itself, especially if you have a wife and kids that all love to stream, download music and surf the web.And I haven't met one that doesn't yet that doesn't,so the CC was a huge selling point for me personally.

And IMO people are upset with their results from the duma because they expected to much from it,meaning they thought they were going to win every gun fight they got into and be the next MLG star. It's a router, it's not going to make your reflexes any better, your map awareness any better or your aim any better. But IMO that's what people thought,I still hear people on the headset talking about how they can't wait "until COD gets dedicated servers" cuz it will make the game so much better.

And as said above the duma also can't fix someone else's crappy connection or control who else connects to the same dedi as you do but people misunderstood that and I think that they though they were gonna be able to kind of "cherry pick" who was in there lobby or the old "host advantage" scenario from earlier titles.

If people took a little more time and did a little more research on whatever it is their buying, they would have realistic expectations of the outcome of said product

I didn't say in my previous post...

I got what I expected and am very pleased with the results.

And I can't wait for the new OS as I'm confident that it will take things to the next level and beyond.
