Changing ISP

So I've hopefully talked the billpayer into ditching Virgin for a new ISP.

So, who do you guys recommend? Needs to be good for gaming of course.

IDnet is out, too pricey.

Was thinking about BT but was with them a few years back and had nothing but problems with their idiotic customer service and ridiculously low speeds. Are they better now? Is Infinity any good?

Needs to have between 50mb and 100mb download speed.

Could go for infinity 2 which is up to 80 down 20 up,depending on how far you are from the exchange or if the copper that feeds your house is in good condition, fttc packages are better for gaming over cable any day due to the jitter people experience on cable but I'm sure you allready know that, sky fibre large is the same package,I'm currently on bt infinity 1 and they changed from the standard 40/10 to 52/10 and I get the full speeds as advertised,my connection is great just take a look at the video I put on gameplay section, not saying it's allways this good but most the time it is,Zen is with Talk talk and he gets a flat line ping,it all depends on the line quality I suppose

BT / TalkTalk etc will at the most have 75-80 (I forget what) on their top package, it's what they top-out at.

It depends on your distance from the cab. I can only get 22/5.

But I couldn't play on my Virgin Media line, so I had to change.

With BT you'll have to use PPPoE with the Netduma I believe but TalkTalk is plug'n'play.

Either way you're best to ditch the ISP's hub and get a standalone modem.

As a side note: TalkTalk's customer service is terrible, it is genuine torture trying to deal with them.

But I don't have any problems that I need them for so it doesn't concern me.

It's more how close you are to the cabinet that makes the difference I think, with fibre coming from the exchange to the cab no speed is lost there, you will lose from the cabinet to ur home i beleive

Ok. Erm... I know where the closest cabinet is but couldn't say how close to my home. About 2 mins walk around abouts.

if you buy your own modem the rule of thumb is to match it to the exchange near you. mine is lantiq so I bought a lantiq chipset modem. hauwei uses broadcom. Never use an isp provided equipment is it is usually sub standard!

If your exchange is lantiq then go for the draytek vigor 130 modem.

It is the distance from the cabinet in the street not the exchange :)

Ok, like I said, the nearest cabinet is about 2 mins walk from my door so that should be the best speed right?

Without getting too technical, when you think about changing ISP you might want to bear in mind the following:

The limiting factors of the actual speed that you will be get is not limited to the distance from your house to the cabinet..So many other factors are involved such as the quality of the copper from the cabinet to your house, your internal wiring, interference, this can go on and on and on..

No matter which ISP you choose, they should be able to give you an estimated speed that your line might support before you place an order. This is not guaranteed. The actual speed

that you would receive can only be known once you have an active service.

Along with the usual checks regarding the ISP reputation, price and customer service record (because it would be nice to know they answer the phone and emails  ;)), you should also try to find out the status of the ISPs Network. Ideally you want an ISP with an under-subscribed network to be sure you are not getting delays before you even leave the ISP out to the Internet!

As a gamer, you should also check what kind of peering agreements they have in place.

Hope that helps

I reckon if you can walk there in 2 mins and it's 100% the right cabinet that you are connected too then I think you would be able to get the full speeds you pay for

Its the closest one so I just assume it'd be the one. Its the only one on this estate. Next closest is about 5 mins walk from me anyways.

You could ask neighbours which ISP they use and if they would mind if you could run a ping plotter from their connection

I am very happy with my ping / latency, no jitter and capacity from talk talk.

But they could be oversubscribed in another area.

That's why asking and testing other line is a good thing to do as long as they don't have a line fault

They're all on different.

Most on Virgin but some on Sky, BT or TalkTalk. Not friends with any of them though, most are benefit scum :(

Leaning toward BT Infinity 2. Maybe Infinity 1, it depends on the billpayer, there is quite a difference in price and thats what they care about the most.

IMO I wouldn't get your internet "on the cheap" it's all about the quality of the line.I would rather pay a little more and have a more solid ISP than to save a few bucks and have one that's got a ton of jitter on it.

With that being said I had to drop my dedicated gaming line as after my year long promotion was up they more than tripled the price and it wasn't even enough to run my households it had to go.A few bucks is reasonable (20-40 ) IMO but not 80-100 a month, since your from the UK I would get with the guys that are from over there...Z,Boom,BENORMUS,Big Dog,they are all stand up guys and give great advice.

I know they can't say go with "X" ISP and it will be great as the line quality could vary a ton between where you live and they live but they can give you their experiences with the ISP's over there.

Best of luck to you on deciding

Again, I won't be paying the bill ;)

Looks to me that Infinity 1 is £30 a month and 2 is £15 more a month. I would rather 2 and thats what I will try to convince but overall, I can only state my opinion.
