High ping spikes, latency, jitter

So I recently got a new modem installed yesterday by Comcast (it was a free upgrade), and ever since then I've been experiencing huge amounts of ping spikes, latency and jitter. My Internet Diagnosis test on the R1 was showing good ping, no packet loss, but terrible for spikes and jitter. I then ran a ping plotter test only connected to my new modem (without the R1), and I was getting the same kind of results with high latency and spikes (. I called Comcast and spoke with someone from their advanced tech team, and he believes he knows what the problem is so there's a tech guy coming to fix it and sort it out tomorrow afternoon. I'm bringing this up here because I would like to get another opinion on if this could be the possible problem as well. It seems to be a problem with my line and Docsis 3.0.

Ping test results (from modem without R1):

Channel type is according to your stats : DOCSIS2.0 (ATDMA)

If it is like cable in the UK then you want to be close to 0 for power levels either + or - close to 0 is ok , so it looks fine for power levels to me but I may be wrong for US levels.

Maybe wait for a US member that uses cable and knows about US the power levels.

I'm also very sorry if my copy and paste job for my power levels is sloppy and looks the way it does. Here's a screenshot if it's easier to read. Downstream on the left, upstream on the right.

OK thanks Zen. All of these problems have only started occurring after I got the new modem put in by Comcast which was yesterday. I don't think it's a coincidence lol He said he doesn't believe it's the modem because all my signals were fine, but once he saw my power levels he thought that was most likely the issue that was causing all of my latency. He ran a ping test as well from my modem and got the same ping spikes. Like I said I'm having a tech guy come here tomorrow to sort it out, I just figured I'd post my situation here as well to get some more feedback  :)

If the problem persists after the tech guy comes here tomorrow, I will consider replacing the modem. Doesn't seem like it's a coincidence like I said because this problem has only started AFTER my new modem was installed. My previous modem was a technicolor tc8305c. All of the results I've posted are directly connected to my new ARRIS TG1682G without the R1 connected to it.

Here they use D2 for the upstream for whatever reason... For that you'd want between +-10 and for D3 you'd want +-5 in my personal opinion from everything I know.

But yeah signals are perfect so it's more than likely the modem. I did have this problem last summer and it ended up being a bad amp feeding my street. Had huge random ping spikes up to 3-400ms so it could be a line issue, but since it's only happening since the upgrade more than likely not.

The only thing to do here is to change modems and see what happens. If it's still going on then you know it's an issue somewhere else and if that's the case GOOD LUCK lol

Update: Comcast tech guy did his thing, but the spikes are still happening. Pretty clear at this point it's my updated modem. I'll give another update after I pick up my TP-Link TC-7610 tomorrow. At least I have peace of mind now knowing that I have new cabling and that that wasn't the issue :) haha

I just wanted to chime in here since I am a Chicagoland Comcast Xfinity customer   I don't have very good luck with this company or any of its junk, wether it be its equipment or service Sorry, thats the extent of my rant...

I found something one day looking for some info regarding this specific Router/Modem TG1682G, which i currently rent from comcast by the way. I too am having problems with random issues, high spikes, really bad jitter, high latency. I can never get the same result twice, especially test done close to each other.

The poster feels that the either the auto negotiation of the router/modem combo or the stand alone router is at fault... I hope I can get a moderators input regarding the post I will link. It is a very interesting idea if it is true. Something tells me the Reddit post has some validity but I have no true way to test it short of buying a new stand alone modem.

I honestly believe it's the TG1682G at fault. I never had an issue with my Technicolor TC8305C (my previous modem, even though it was an all-in-one). All of the sudden the first hour of having the TG1682G, all of these issues started occurring for me. Even after Comcast came to my house and re-did all of my wiring outside and into my house, the issues were still happening. I don't want to tell you that it's 100% your modem, but in my case it's 99% the modem haha I'm picking up a TP-Link TC7610 now because of this. I would suggest changing modems.

That's what I plan on doing but I would like a look into what I posted about auto negotiation issues though it's something I'd like a professional here at NetDuma to hopefully address. If not I'll start my own thread about it.

@Buck Nasssty I would concur with your assessment of the situation as well thatanks for posting specific results with different modem brands and models. That saves me and many others time.

in order to attain a better gaming experience, I truly believe you need two separate devices.

Couldn't agree more. Recent personal experience has confirmed this 100% for me.

I expect that there are some router/modem combos that are up to the job but mine wasn't.

The difference it made to my ping and line stability, within 12 hours, was ridiculous.

I'm welling up with tears of stable-low-ping happiness just thinking about it.

There are so many helpful people on this forum ( except that fuzzy clam guy) which is great but these people actually know what there talking about which is really important when it comes to stuff like this.

Just another reason this forum is solid as hell and again congrats Joe that's a huge difference for you... :)

Couldn't agree more. Luckily I've never had that many issues with my Netduma or setup, but whenever any popped up I've always had people help out tremendously and point me in the right direction. That's all anyone can ever ask for :)

Has your modem  updated? If so, do any of the lights flash while it's on? Mine used to until it updated. Not sure if it's normal. I'm beginning to think some of my line issues are from my modem and a wonky update.
