Bufferbloat question

I have a question on bufferbloat results, hopefully it's not a dumb one ;) . I get an A+ bufferbloat with A quality, but the background has a lot of red (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/9219149), whereas I see most people who get an A+ bufferbloat have a white background and much less wiggle room with that red line (http://forum.netduma.com/uploads/monthly_01_2017/post-7883-0-98749200-1483813395.png). Does this mean anything or am I just looking too deep into this? haha

Seems fine to me :) I wouldn't read into the background colours much; the numbers on the side are more relevant. The sample (red line) on download being under 10ms is pretty good compared to some people, so you shouldn't need to worry too much. (I'm not sure what the background colour indicates though since it's not clear, though I'm sure it's fine based on the stats.)

The red background is just to colourfully illustrate the larger spikes (bufferbloat) above a certain threshold, going into the 'bad' red level, compared to the 'idle' ping.

It looks as though something has gone wrong with your 'idle' ping as it's showing at 0ms, which means that anything other than '0' will be classed as a spike/bloat.

Whereas in XSXS' image, his 'idle' ping is a more 'normal' figure (23ms)

It looks like his idle ping + 20ms would be in yellow on the background.

Then another 50ms on top of that would be in the red.

Because your idle has registered at 0ms, yours hits yellow at about 2ms, then red at 4ms.

Any little bufferbloat spike will push you into the red basically.

the red part is considered bad, more red you have the better quality line you have.

The less you go into the red section, then the better your bufferbloat results, I'd say.

Unless your graph has no red at all...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I see. Not entirely sure why my idle ping is like that. Could there be a cause to it and a fix? All of my gaming seems to run smooth, so it's not like there's any problems at all. I just wanted to see why I was getting that red background compared to white by most other people. Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Agree...Damn Boom that's crazy good,I might have to get me one of those Netduma's... :D

And Joe just keep tweaking until you find the most consistent readings but do keep in mind that those readings will fluctuate and change during the course of the day and your home network traffic so always try and do it on a quiet network.

Spot on, that's why I only really test with Ping Plotter when testing how well Anti-Flood is controlling my spikes.

I think it's much more important to see a live view of what's happening to my ping when someone is constantly browsing and streaming youtube, compared to what dslreports says is good (seeing as youtube browsing will be the thing most likely, in my house, to cause me any spikes).

I tested using PP, with youtube streaming simultaneously on my phone, ipad, and laptop, thought I might as well go for overkill.

And I tested with some speedtest.net too, as those tests totally max out the line for about 10 seconds and if that doesn't cause bufferbloat then nothing will.

I only ran that test on dslreports to see if it agreed with my testing and would say it was as good as I thought it was.

Running Ping plotter seemed to point out what my issue is. I'm getting about 55-58% packet loss to my R1. I tried testing different cables to my R1 and ISP router, and I was still getting all that packet loss. I then tried a test directly connected to my ISP router (Technicolor tc8305c) without the R1 with the same cables I used for the R1 tests and I got zero packet loss. Any thoughts on what could be causing that much packet loss to my R1? I also posted about this in this thread (if you would like to post there too): http://forum.netduma.com/topic/19906-ping-plotter-showing-packet-loss/.

Zen stated it's a Ping Plotter bug in my other thread and that's most likely what it is. I don't see myself getting an A+ bufferbloat with max speeds, no packet loss anywhere else I test, etc. while having that much packet loss shown on Ping Plotter lol I also tried a different port out of my hub like you said just for the hell of it but still got the same readings. Probably just a bug like Zen said lol Thanks!

If anyone is seeing packet loss with PingPlotter

On a windows machine

Start > run > type cmd > type>

ping twitter.co.uk -n 25

or

ping twitter.com -n 25

or

ping bbc.co.uk -n 25

if at the end of the test it shows 0 packet loss then it is a bug.

It's possibly a bug within pingplotter. Because the same thing happens ton all the modems I've used and I too have a technicolor. I don't have high packet loss anywhere else besides testing it straight to netduma. Who's your ISP?

Yep that was my same issue. Everywhere else was fine other than Ping Plotter. My ISP is Comcast. Luckily they're giving me a free modem upgrade on Friday. I've had this one for a few years now. Didn't really have any problems with it but hey I'll take a free upgrade haha

  • 2 weeks later...

Figured I would give an update on my bufferbloat because I've been messing around with my settings. I previously used Preemptive with turbo unticked and my sliders at 10 down, 30 up because that was the ONLY way I could ever get an A bufferbloat on my laptop. Because of that, I figured all of my devices would get the same reading/results in terms of BB. Today I was bored and decided to run a BB test on dslreports through the Microsoft Edge app on my Xbox to see if there was any difference. For my test on Xbox I changed to Reactive with turbo ticked (what I really should have anyway because I get 240 down/12 up speeds with everything at 100%; never ran with these settings in the past though because my BB was horrible on my laptop with 400ms download spikes) and sliders at 70/70. The difference in results on my Xbox were insane! I was getting an A BB every time. I knew I could get it better though so I kept messing around with my sliders and found that 40/65 gave me an A+ across the board every single time. I then tested it again on my laptop with those same settings and my BB was really bad with a lot of spikes. Went back to test on Xbox again and A+ again. I really don't know why there's that enormous of a difference between the two for me, but my results through my Xbox are what really matter to me because they were consistent A+'s every time. It might sound dumb to some people, but I would suggest trying to run a BB test on the Xbox like I did just to see if you get anything different than your computer. I originally did it for shits and gigs but turns out it made a catastrophic difference haha I can definitely tell the difference in my gameplay as well.

Glad you got the results your looking for both for BB and gameplay Joe,looks great...with that being said normally checking anything thru Xbox or PS4 (speeds etc) is usually not very reliable.

But agin if it works for you as everyone's network is different, good on you... :D

As far as detailed network stats on consoles, yes they are not accurate 95% of the time haha I did my test through dslreports on the Microsoft Edge app (basically like opening your browser on your computer, only now on your console). Although it may not be 100% reliable to do this on console, I think it's still worth a test for some people just to put the results from their computer and their console side by side to see if there are any major differences. Really don't have anything to lose giving it a test :)
