Hi i recently had comcast out to my house for a cable issue and while they were here the technician strongly suggested that we swap out modems because we were using an older version the arris model that is just a modem and not a router. the new one I have is huge  in size and is a modem/router combo that has 4 hard wire ports and also has a 2 and 5 ghz wireless channel. after technician installed the new modem. I was back to a Moderate connection. I decided the best thing to do was to factory reset my netduma and set up everything from scratch with my new modem. After factory resetting I followed all steps and achieve the speeds that I am looking for but my console is constantly reverting back to moderate and sometimes even strict nat in game. My ps4 always says i have a type 2 connection though. I know that the game can sometimes show a false NAT reading but it just seems odd that before I had this modem installed I had a straight open connection every time I played.

my setup is comcast gateway > netduma > ps4 and other hard wired consoles.

on the comcast gateway i have placed the netduma in the DMZ which should open all ports on my netduma if I am understanding correctly but it does not and i still am getting a moderate nat.

on the Netduma i have tried virtually all methods of forwarding ports

method 1 turn off upnp port forward the following ports to my ps4 ip address 80, 443, 1935, 3074, 3478-3480, 3076 , 3075 all both (tcp udp) this has had some form of success. when i restart both my netduma and my modem console I will get an open NAT. but the next time I turn my console back on I will need to restart network again to get network open.

method 2 disable all manual port forwarding rules on the netduma and enable upnp. after doing so I again restart netduma and modem console to make sure that all changes have taken effect. but I am still getting not able to open my network.

I was wondering if anyone is able to see what I am doing wrong or if someone has had experience with this same modem and how you set your network up to get an open nat. the only other possibility I can think of is taking the netduma out of the DMZ and trying to re try both methods again.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I have tried to read through all relative posts and tutorials before reaching out to the community I hope my question does not inconvenience anyone and thank you for any help that can be given.

Some thoughts:

1. Why are you putting your Netduma router in DMZ when the Netduma router's UPnP works great? Not saying that you should use UPnP but I would rather use UPnP than put anything in DMZ.

2. Make sure you turn off the router functionality of your Comcast dual modem/router. Otherwise, it will cause problems with your Netduma router.

3. For Method 1, you need to create a static IP address for your PS4 to ensure consistent results. Otherwise, your port forwarding rules will forward ports to the wrong IP address.

I suspect this might be the case since your Method 2 (UPnP) isn't giving you a NAT Open status.

Once you get a NAT Open status with UPnP, then you can worry about port forwarding.

From an experienced Comcast customer...

1. Comcast lies to you. They want you to use their "new" modem because it gives out their Xfinity hotspot wifi connection for all to use and expand their coverage of their network.

2. The modem actually is worse when it comes to ping.

3. Call and tell them to put it in bridge mode to disable the router features of the modem. Then plug your Netduma into port 1 and run it that way.

OR... Buy your own modem. I recommend the TP-Link TC-7610 from Amazon for a cheap price. Saves yourself $10 a month rental and it works beautifully with the Netduma.

The honest answer is im just trying to keep my NAT open and no other settings seem to do that since the switch.

2. Make sure you turn off the router functionality of your Comcast dual modem/router. Otherwise, it will cause problems with your Netduma router.

I did not do this yet because the Netduma doesnt have a 5 channel so I was trying to see if the wifi users in the house would have a better experience. I will have to try putting it into bridge mode. I did not know that it would interfere with each other I just thought people in the house would now get to choose between which wifi network they wanted to join.

Yes sir I have a static IP set up for my console.

One thing i forgot to add in my first post was that I also have many game consoles in the house  and when I use Upnp on the Netduma a certain console in the house always takes the port 3074 which is the one that seems to be most important to gaining an open NAT while playing Call of Duty. My console and this other console are usually on at the same time because me and the other person are usually playing games in our spare time.

That Arris model in the picture is the one that they just took from me and replaced with that biggest size dual model. Ive also used the smaller looking similar one next to it but I was not happy with the results and went back to the Arris model.

I am just looking to have the best set up for our house we both want to be able to party up with friends etc and have an open nat when we go to play. Thanks everyone for your help Im sorry i dont use message boards often and was having trouble figuring out how to properly quote a post. I know there has got to be a lot of people that have the same or similar equipment and set up to me I would so appreciate if someone could let me know what settings they believe to be best for my setup.

Thanks so much everyone

You can only have so many consoles on the same router before you experience the problems you're seeing with NAT Open status. The consoles are all trying to grab the same ports at the same time (if you have friends all trying to game with each other on the same network with same routers).

Maybe your situation will be resolved when we all finally move to ipv6 protocols. But with the current ipv4 protocols, this is just how it is.

If you let people connect to the modem's 5ghz then you defeat the whole purpose of using congestion control at all.

The best way to run it is modem in bridge mode > Netduma > if you want get a 2nd router for 5ghz wifi and use it as an access point. That's how everyone here runs their setup.

Great point about how having 2 "primary" routers would defeat the purpose of Congestion Control. I was thinking primarily about the trouble with 2 active routers from a port forwarding / networking perspective.

Just got home from work I am going to make some changes to this network setup just wanna make sure I am setting things up the way you guys have recommended to do so.

I am first off going to put my Comcast modem/router into bridge mode and make sure all devices are connecting through the Netduma wireless network. So that congestion control takes effect on all devices.

Then going to take the Netduma out of the DMZ of the modem and try and manually forward all ports to the IP address of my Console. Would you guys suggest going this route or should I try and use upnp? my only issues with upnp seem to be that a Xbox 1 console and a PS4 console on the same network have problems maintaining open NATs. This is very important to both of us and if there is a way to make sure we both always have open NATs without having to constantly reset the network that is what im shooting for. If that is not possible then I just need to make sure that my console is always getting priorty on those ports because I am the head of the household and pay the bills ROFL.

Thanks again for all the help Merry Christmas

after placing my modem into bridge mode I am not able to access this interace using 10.0.0.1 is this normal? I moved my ethernet cord connecting the R1 into port 1 internet is all working fine and everything is connecting to the Netduma wirelessly. just seems weird I cannot see my comcast modem software anymore. how would one revert back to bridge mode off in this case? I dont want to do this was just curious if there was something I was doing wrong or if factory reset on modem is the only way to get out of bridge mode now?

Yes it is likely to have a different IP to access the interface now that it is in bridge mode, search your model followed by bridge mode and should let you know the IP to access it on.

Try the guide here for open NAT on two consoles: http://forum.netduma.com/topic/19592-simple-steps-to-forwarding-the-same-ports-for-2-different-gaming-console-types-ps4-xbox-one-on-the-netduma-r1-router

Also I saw you mentioned about your friend but you had open NAT at the time. Sounds like you need to add them to your allow list: http://support.netduma.com/support/solutions/articles/16000022357--with-the-geo-filter-how-do-i-play-with-friends-

Hi Fraser,

Thanks for referencing my tutorial. Regrettably though, it only works when one of the consoles is turned off (while the other is on). My tutorial is intended for a single gamer who owns 2 different consoles on the same router/network.

In Allanim's case, he and a roommate each have their own consoles and they want to use them at the same time (and have NAT Open status on both).

For that, I think Allanim has no choice but to use the Netduma's UPnP, which will allow both his and his roommate's consoles to be on at the same time (and have NAT Open status).

Hey guys sorry busy holidays as I am sure the same situation with you guys. First off I want to thank everyone here you guys are amazing. So i put the modem into bridge mode and got everything sorted on that end to where I am able to access the software. after doing so it automatically took the Netduma out of the DMZ because is bridge mode it nothing more than a basic cable modem. Manually forwarded all necessary ports my console. Congestion control and everything else is set up exactly the same had that dialed in before all this happened pretty well.

Now here is the crazy thing. I am experiencing the best connections I have seen in a very long time. thank you so much for all your help. I have not asked my room mate if he is getting an open NAT I would think he would let me know if his connection was bad which he has not since the changes have been made.

What you said earlier about accessing the modem's config page, once it's in bridge mode you can't if I remember correctly. Glad you got it working :)
