Intel's Puma 6 chipset suffers from latency & jitter, fix soon.

Hey Mod, I have the same internet speed package from Comcast as you and was wondering if this modem works for ALL Comcast customers (I'm from NJ). I just got a new modem installed yesterday (ARRIS TG1682G) and it has been giving me outrageous spikes and latency/jitter. My old modem was a Technicolor tc8305c and didn't give me any spikes whatsoever. I only upgraded because it was a free upgrade on Comcast. Their tech guy is coming here tomorrow to work on my line because he saw an issue that could be causing the latency I'm getting. However, if I notice the problem continues to happen after he's done working on it, it's going to be pretty obvious that it's the modem which is causing it. If that's the case, I'd like to check out this TP-Link modem you're talking about. Do you know if this TP-Link is compatible with all Comcast customers who have 240/12 speeds?   

 

NJ too and yeah it will work fine... However it depends, do you need their phone service?

 

Let him check your line to fix any issues. PM me your modem diagnostic page where it shows the signal levels. I know when I had their all in one modem/router thing it sucked for ping. I had huge spikes just trying to ping the modem itself. You can however try putting it in bridge mode. That did help for me a bit, but at the end of the day I rather own my own equipment and keep everything separated. If it's a line issue bridge mode won't help.

 

Edit: Nevermind, I saw your other post... Those signals are PERFECT, but it could be a signal issue still. More than likely it is the modem though. Either way, I rather buy my own stuff so you can't go wrong with the TC-7610

OK sweet. I'll see how things are after he does maintenance because if they're still bad then the ARRIS TG1682G can be added to the list of modems which have this Puma 6 issue. It could be a line issue though since the new modem is connecting to more channels which could be channels with noise. It's honestly a can of worms and you kinda have to go one step at a time. First have the tech come, pay attention and ask what he's doing and why? If that doesn't fix it, try putting the modem in bridge mode. If still no good, then buy your own modem. If it's still no good, then good luck complaining to get them to fix an issue outside lol

Update: Comcast tech guy did his thing, but the spikes are still happening. Pretty clear at this point it's my updated modem. I'll give another update after I pick up my TP-Link TC-7610 tomorrow. At least I have peace of mind now knowing that I have new cabling and that that wasn't the issue  :) haha

Update: Comcast tech guy did his thing, but the spikes are still happening. Pretty clear at this point it's my updated modem. I'll give another update after I pick up my TP-Link TC-7610 tomorrow. At least I have peace of mind now knowing that I have new cabling and that that wasn't the issue  :) haha

 

Again, it still could be an issue outside. Connecting to more channels on the new modem exposed it.

 

Have you tried putting it into bridge mode?

Yes I've tried bridge mode and still get the spikes. I'm pretty certain it's the modem. There's no way it can't be to me. Like I said all of these problems popped up within the hour after it was installed. My older one never had a single spike ever. I'm definitely not ruling out that it could be an issue outside still, but the fact that these problems started the same day I got the modem is kind of fishy haha All of my signals are spot on.

It is looking more like the modem, we just would not want you to buy one and still have the issue.

 

But of course you know the pitfalls :) Amazon may be the best place to buy.

Keep us updated... As for the old modem working fine, it's very possible that it was not connecting to the "bad" channels that your new modem is since it's 32 channels

Yep I ordered it from Amazon. Luckily I'm a prime member so I get free 2-day shipping (ordered it yesterday and it will arrive tomorrow). That very well could be the issue too. My old modem was an 8x4 and the upgraded one they gave me is a 32x8 I believe.

More channels is definitely better... But those channels have to be stable. For me channels 1-16 suck so I reboot my modem until it connects to 17-24 which are newer and have less errors. Although in the last update for whatever reason they removed the error counter on the modem.

I had the 6190 and always thought my ISP was to blame for the jitter and spikes, swapped with the 6183 and COD seems to run better now. Just switched about 2 weeks ago though, I hope it's not a placebo lol.

I used to have problems with the 6183 before finally having it received the proper firmware to disable the Energy-efficient Bug that was on by default and couldn't turn it off in the modem settings. I called ISP and told them I wanted my modem updated and they said they would contact the manufacturer to send it. And maybe a few days later or a week I believe. My modem deserted by itself a d had the new update. Before I had terrible ping spikes, I couldn't use the netduma at all... the netduma would auto reset by itself because the modem couldn't handle the threshold power and deserted (because it was using energy-efficient setting EEE by default).

 

I still have "some jitter" but it's somewhat bearable, why looking forward to the DumaOS. Get that jitter down better... can only do so much on your end where your isp says they don't see anything lol.

Be ware that the Arris SB6190 is experiencing some FW issues seen here:

There are two problems, ICMP and TCP/UDP. 

 

 

The SB 6180/83 do not suffer from this issue. This is an Intel Chip set issue. The new up and coming SB 8200 is supposed to be Broadcom based.

It is and its great for cable folks that can fix this issue with a modem change or FW update, pleased for you guy's andI'm 

I'm having some issues with high latency and ping on the SB6183 is there any solution or firmware update that can fix this? or any other beast modem out there that will help?

Saw your other post too... I'd go with the TP-Link TC-7610 it works perfect with the R1 and it's cheap

We attempted to put a patch out on our end but didn't work unfortunately, its not our issue to fix.
