bufferbloat help

Recommended Posts

i have had the netduma for about 3 months now and still switching around settings to find what works best for me. i have verizon fios (fiber optics) i pay for 150/150 so i set my settings on r1 accordingly. when i do the dsl reports test the higher i have my cc sliders the higher up/dwn speeds are. for instance if i set cc at 95 and 95 i get around 145 down and 155 up. the lower i move cc sliders the lower my speeds get. i see people post there speeds on here and its always like 100 down and 25 up or 75 down 15 up. im no tech guy but dont understand why my upload speeds are higher than my download when evryone else i see are the opposite and i know everyones speed is different. so my main prob is my bufferbloat score i cant really ever get a+ or even a's across the board. i set my sliders 87 down 45 up to get close to an A all around. but i still feel i shoot first and die first on cod games. these are my settingspost-9549-0-14275600-1477853824_thumb.pngpost-9549-0-60597100-1477853848_thumb.pngpost-9549-0-13301300-1477853863_thumb.png

You have what appears to be symmetrical, what most have is asymmetrical.  Yours will be close to even on upload and download that is a great thing and you will only see this on fiber generally occasionally S/HDSL.  The CC sliders should lower the speeds, that's by design.  Also, more speed will not take away the shoot first die first issue.  You need to find the sweet spot for YOUR network, YOUR available bandwidth, and YOUR feel of the game.  There is no magic number, threshold, or two networks the same.  70% is  a great place to start.

-Are you doing the test on a quiet network?

-Are you using a browser that has no issues; updates, adware, ad-blockers, java issues...?

-Are you using a wired device for the test?

-Are you disabling the geo-filter before testing?

-Have you tried using pingplotter to verify you don't have ISP issues?

Speeds have nothing to do with what ur trying to accomplish. U seem confused in what buffer bloat is. Ur not even showing us the page that matters most

Actually what he wants does have something to do with his speeds.

He wants to have to fastest speed with the least amount of network buffer.  But he's asking two different questions also.  Once he sorts the bufferbloat out then we can move along to the gaming stuff. He needs to get a baseline first.  You can tweak all day long but with a wishy washy, rerouted ISP, with their own network issues it won't matter one bit what he does on his end in the long run.  He will just be adjusting for a negative from now until they fix it.   His issue could be at the ISP and nothing to do with his side. Some people can have 25/5 or 60/10 and they must slide their cc sliders to 50% to see A+  Some of us have greater than 100Mbps and can see A+ across the board without moving the sliders.  Variables.  Lots of them.

Was 70d 45up on cc sliders. Thats what i dont get ive tryed everything on cc and still get grazy lag spikes on the upload. Should i try to bring it all the way down to like 10 or 15. Any suggestions that could help until i do ping plotter test

Are ALL devices connected to the R1? If not that makes sense why it doesn't appear to be working correctly. Also is your device prioritisation reset?

As Zennon has said before bufferbloat only happens around the point of saturation and at 70% anti-flood it does not saturate so I would recommend leaving it at 70/70 and not worrying about it.

Also regarding your PingPlotter, you pinged yotube.com instead of youtube.com so that website could be anywhere and could be why your plot looks so bad. Try again with youtube.com. Your Twitter plot does have some spikes but no packet loss like the other.

I turned off ipv6 in all 3 locations i have everything connected to r1 but i also have a netgear wifi extender pluged into r1 then have a desktop and solar pannels from my roof pluged into wifi extender. The solar panels are so we can see the electric we get on our computer. Yes ive tryed resetting device prior.

personally I like to look at my DNS of choice, DNS of ISP, and try to find a test point in the same data center as you play your games if they are dedicated servers.  Then use ping plotter on those IPs.  quick and easy choose akamai in US and you should get very close to the colo site for the PSN dedis for your networks shortest path to those CDNs. I have two ISP atm and luckily they both use seperate routes BUT the same backbone/backhaul provider, Level3. In most instances IF your ISP is not routed poorly or overloaded DNS that will be your best DNS.  But there are programs you can use to help you decide.  4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 work well for me on both providers with a 7 hope tracert as well as latency at 18-22ms so that is my baseline and first choice when troubleshooting with pingplotter, if that's jacked then most others will be as well but not always.  I'm not the best at reading ping plotter results but generally you will see some packet loss on large subscriber CDNs such as google, youtube, netflix, yahoo, twitter... etc.  Usually it will be at the hand off point to those peering devices for that fabric. But if your local traffic is not having issues with stream, posting, etc then I would concentrate on finding the IP range closest to the areas/providers that you generally game in by best route ie; lowest latency.  That's kind of the whole purpose is proving the route bad or good to you pre-designed network route and the available content you wish to use that has the most importance.

It's a lot of work but well worth it.  When everything is going well, I can download a movie or series of movies at 50Mbps my kids can be streaming 3-4 youtube streams and we can have error free, lag free gaming all at the same time.  never adding any latency to the games.

Quick question... How is your setup connected? Are you plugging the R1 into the Fios modem or are you running the R1 directly from the ONT (the big ass box they install in/on your home)
