Think i'm done...

That BQM monitor can be a bit funny with dynamic IPs, I remember it doing it to me before.

I think you can still get it monitoring your line but if your IP changes then the graph will go blank after that (and you have to set it running again with the new IP).

Although I did have a time where I couldn't get it to monitor it at all, think it showed red all over as if it had constant 100% packet loss.

Yeah I tried it again today. Pulled my IP from the link Zennon provided, set it up and got 100% packet loss so I just deleted the monitor.

For what it's worth regarding above, Sky use Dynamic IP's but only migrate once the router has been turned off for 30 minutes or more as that is how long the reservation is for i think. So as long as you keep your router on, your IP shoud not change, in fact since i did the work to my laster socket a few weeks back i still have the same IP as my router has not been off. I have noticed that the last couple of nights the upstairs Sky Q Mini box has had to be reset due to it stuttering during playback. After a reset it is fine. These are running through their built in powerlines, so i may have to turn on the 5Ghz Network on the boxes if it pursists.

As for line quality, i think DLM is playing silly buggers...

afb1422d98cd7e5c8ee6aca5f68c50e9-01-12-2

It dropped a good 4ms or so yesterday, and then went back up in the evening. I thought it was teasing me, and when i check it this morning it has gone down again lol.

I'm hoping for at least one more drop of the same amount, but i'm already happy with my BB now.

Mine has gone up from about 9ms to 26ms through DLM at the moment, my 'uptime' seems to reset every 3 or so days which I assume is what's causing it.

TalkTalk are sort of looking into it for me, although all they're really doing is asking me to run traceroutes etc

That is a good starting point to see if you are routed incorrectly.

Yeah it takes time to diagnose sometimes but they are on the right path, striking off in the correct order.

But I want it NOOOOOOOOOW !!!

edit - I should add that my games aren't negatively affected. I'm still totally awesome.

Last one for now, promise :)

Boom! Single digit ping back as of 2am this morning! It's taken the DLM nearly a month in all to come back down, but i'm glad i stuck it out. Can't wait to give it a try, will post back with results. I had a session till 2am the other day after the last big drop of 4ms or so and i must be honest, i found it worse than the higher interleaving depth, nothing like VM though lol.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just checking in. Not sure if anyone can help but when I posted the last latency check above you can see it dropped to the single digit ping I saw when I first had it installed. However I noticed that while I was gaming, my experience was worse than that of when I had the interleaving on the line. I put it down to the fact that it was the time of day, etc. Out of interest last week I checked my public ip and it turns out that my IP has changed, and when I create a new monitor with the correct ip I get a different set of results!

My average ping according to the new monitor is roughly 18ms which is double what I thought I had. The router has not been reset, there have been no power cuts and no disruption to the libe that I know of. I know it's not the end of the world but can anyone answer these questions for me:

Do Sky still offer 'pro' on their fibre max products? If not can I ask them to change the line profile for me?

I have the original monitor still running and the results show spikes at roughly the same time as my new one, which is really strange. Any idea what has happened and if I am still being interleaved or if the new ping is my actual ping or not.

Edit:

Just looking at the graph above, my new monitor is more or less identicle to the results before the packet loss and reduced ping. So maybe the ip changed during that packet loss and the single digit ping never actually happened. Not sure who that ip belongs to now though.

When the DLM makes any changes to your line you will re-sync, which may involve you changing IP.

I would recommend using ping plotter over BQM buts that is only my opinion :)

Yeah, that means buying the full version and having a laptop connected to the R1/Hub permanently while it is doing it's thing, which is not ideal with the placement of my router.

I do wish there was an easier way to test tbh, i'm hoping V2 brings some more in depth diagnostic tools.

Does anyone know if 'Pro' is still available to Sky customers on Fibre Max? I phoned them last week and the dude i spoke to was useless, said he had no idea what i was talking about!

Not another thread revival!

Another update. It's not a positive one like the previous ones.

I was gaming last night, solo, as i normally do these days. I am only able to game every now and again, and it's always from 11pm till roughly 2am, i have to lose sleep in order to do it. But as it is one of the only hobbies i have left now i don't mind.

Cut a long story short, i'm feel i am no better off than i was 12 months ago. I don't play Modern warfare or Infinite Warfare, just BO3. I know what replies i'm about to get, "the game is broken", "wrong time of day" etc, but these are all things that are out of my control.

If anyone has not read or followed this thread, last year i was about done with the R1 as i could not feel the benefit of using it. It's wifi was poor for other devices, and my ISP (VM) had naturally bad jitter. I decided to take the plunge, follow everyones advice and change ISP. So far so good, i 'felt' i was getting better games, and then it stopped.

Now everytime i load BO3 up, if i use Host Filtering it can take upto 2 mins to get a game, which will either have a lobby of 5-6 people or a game in progress with 5 other people in it. I assume this is P2P because the lag spikes are awful. Me and the top player in the lobby leader board were negative K/D while 6 other plasyers with connections flicking from 2 bar to 43 bar are running the show and skipping all over the place. If i disable host filtering i end up on EU servers but will find a game instantly, however, even in these games i get lag spikes, presumably from other players as i run by them.

Last week i reset everything (Q hub and R1) and started over. Connected devices one by one, naming each one, assigning a static IP to my Xbox One, putting it in hyperlane, applying line speeds and disitribution etc. This was mainly down to the above Wifi speed problem i was having, which i am getting a solid 40mbps now, so it has improved. However, my gameplays have not, and it's actually stressing me out. I know it shouldn't, but i get so little time to do something i WANT to do, that when i end up spending 50% of my time looking at a twirly treyarch logo because i'm having to keep quit lobbies it just makes me depressed. If i had the money to buy another game i would. I even put GTA on last night for an hour as i was just getting so wound up over BO3.

I get that i'm not a brilliant player, i understand that. I understand i will not win every single gun fight, yes. But why should i go through all the effort of making my connection the best it can be and spend all this money i don't really have on equipment that is not benefitting me. Johnny dialup comes in with no thumbs and kicks my ass constantly with a shotgun from midrange, or people who skip about all match making it impossible for me to get any aim assist or hit markers. I know it's nothing to go by but during the match my ping monitor is anywhere from 33ms (lowest) to 144ms last night. So my point is why should i bother with the R1? It's to benefit me right? So why do people do better without it? Am i wrong in thinking people should be punished to having cack connections?

On VM i had tragic jitter, but my latency was lower and my speeds higher. Now i have a higher base ping with lower jitter and speed.

I'm sorry if it sounds like i'm bitching and moaning but nobody here can acuse me of not trying my hardest. Reading other threads on here there are always threads with one line just saying this thing does not work blah blah blah. They've not done their homework, or set it up properly, they just expect it to work. I did everything by the book and i am no better than i was when i started this thread.

I'm afraid i can't one on one Fraser. I work 9 hour days and as i mentioned above i'm not free till very late in the evening. I do appreciate it, but i don't think it is a setup problem, it's more of a line problem.

Thank you Fraser. I am just about to post a thread in there now. I will PM you my login details soon after. Let me know when you require the login details, i tried to send via PM but it says you are unable to receive any more.

You have to cover Ireland with the geo for blops3 to get a dedicated server on Xbox azure server bank.

I know, i made sure my home location was set to mid wales ish and covered the whole of the UK and Ireland. Strict was tried on and off. Ping assist was always at 0.

I played yesterday with similar settings and I got the Irish bank, did you have your console off before you set the geo up?

If not I would recommend a reboot of the console after a change.

Funny you should mention that, i turned it off last night via the button rather than a soft off like i normally do. The geo is almost conatantly on for the xbox unless i am expecting updates where i turn it off so they can happen while it's not in use.

It was not just last night i've been having rubbish games. It's practically all the time. A few weeks back i had a whole night of decent games when partied up with my buddy, and i lead the lobby in 80% of the matches we played over the 3 hours or so, but since and before then, i might get one good game in 4 hours playtime. I've gotten to the point where i dread turning it on to play, as i end up ripping my hair out watching that bloody icon spin round.

I did flush my temp bans last night before i started too, just in case, to no avail. Tbh though, i don't actually use the host diagnostic stuff, if i get a naff host i usually just quit and find a new lobby. So sick of having to wait for kill cam-naff taunts-leaderboard-loading screen-lobby countdown-loading screen-round countdown etc i got into the habit of quitting during the final kill cam and finding a new lobby as soon as i load back in.

I think i'm just old, and can't keep up with these kids with Scuff controllers, and time to burn.

Quote of the month, you sir have won this badge of honor for not blaming the game, I am not taking the **** either, you have the balls to admit it unlike many others who blame the game.

Respect.

Don't sweat it too much.  The game plays the way the game plays.

If you haven't had the chance - check out Overwatch, Starwars Battlefront, Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1.  All play 100 times better than IW.  Yes we are getting older and kids have scuff's etc... but don't let it get ya down.  A bad game is a bad game that has no magic settings.  A turd can be polished and told that it's not a turd.. but it still is.  There are much better games out there.  Can we still lose and get whooped?  yeah cause kids are good - but it doesn't seem nearly as bad when the other games are pretty much lag free.

If i had the money i would, trust me. The only reason i'm still playing BO3 is for the gold gear challenges. As for IW, i'm not having any part of that mixed up mess. Next game i pick up will most likely be Watch Dogs because these FPS's all look the same to me at the minute.

Watchdogs 2 was a good game.  If you liked the 1st i definitely recommend it.  Has a great story!

Another update...

Fraser kindly reviewed and altered my settings the end of last week. I had a session over the weekend and although i can get matches now (still not connected to the Irish dedi's), i was still experiencing rubber banding, rubbish hit detection etc. I noticed i'm getting practically no aim assist too, i'm not sure if this is connection based, but i'm using the XR-2(?) AR and the only time i noticed any aim assist was either through a wall, or on a dead enemy!

One thing i did notice was that i had a host that was 41 miles away, and that game was just awful, not only that but i when i was host it was pretty much the same, people skipping all over the place etc. All players showed as 4 bars.

I've resigned for now. I can't play against players that just snap onto me and fire while i seem to be aiming wildly (that what the kill cam shows anyway). As i said previously, i'm not the greatest player, but i have a positive K/D and getting 1-2 good games every 3 hours just isn't worth the grey hairs. I've ordered Watch Dogs 2 anyway this afternoon.

The long and short of it for anyone following this thread is that changing ISP will NOT always fix your problem. I have moved from cable to fibre and although it is more stable i have a higher base ping, and lower download speed. The router will not fix a naff connection, regardless of how 'stable' it is. I have a 78/19 connection with nothing else running while i'm gaming apart from the missus phone, so saturation is non existent, yet i'm posting the same scores as i was on cable. Likewise, the router cannot fix a games problems.

I've still have not been able to answer the question of how some people get awesome games every single time they play BO3. I know there is an element of skill, but connection has to come into it somewhere, and from the lobbies i've seen and been in, some players just plug a controller in and play great.
