    It has been reported by the FBI in America that Russian hackers have infected over 500,000 Routers world wide , multi manufacturers including Netgear, with a VPN Filter Virus, which is able to read and steal traffic data and make unit changes., They infer that a factory reset will disrupt the virus , and a robust password change will help. check the Netgear link below also

    Yey!! One less thing to buy , i was going by a miquote i saw on amazon a while back , , which indicated a heat generation problem , having looked again,, and amazon notorius for mixing up product reviews , to fill their pages , i now suspect that this was one of these cases , my thanks to you both , apologies for wasting your time

    I don't think it will ever get hot enough to the point where you will need extra cooling.

    range extenders are a poor alternative. you would get better results by using an old router as an AP and  powerline adapters

    Will they be giving "cosmetic defect" refunds or exchanges? I for one would have greatly apreciated a swap out! (Qte from reply on same forum)

    Whereas the quote above ,makes interesting reading , it has not come from Netgear Senior Management , but from a humble functionary,on a forum , and it offers no solution to the issue, it has again side stepped .
    We all know it does not effect performance , providing you remember to plug the ethernet cables in reverse , ( why should we have to).incidently the terminolgy used is very familiar

    Killhippie Amazon have removed your customer review , on the XR500 , how sad is that , I await direct contact from netgear , as advised by fraser , there is allways cnet and reddit , and a myriad number of peeps out there. Who will listen and take note
     
    I whole heartedly endorse that this isvery likely one of the best if not the best router out in todays market , all we want is for Netgear to say sorry we made a mistake and provide a long term solution, will they , i doubt it.
     
    Samsung did the same with their note series untill they started catching fire

    I have to agree, it is hardware as I see it and its simply the matter or the port numbers being printed on the wrong way around. I don't think the sticker idea is great, they tend to look ugly. Also its hard to get them on straight in such a small area. The router is not cheap and they should really be exchanged for fixed hardware by Netgear.  Some people may not mind as you cant see the ports and it does not effect functionality, but for the rest new hardware seems the only way forward.
     
     I am surprised this got though QA but what's done is done and one off's like this do happen now and then but its how it is handled that counts. I am pretty sure there will be will no firmware fix.  I bet in a few new months new hardware will have the ports printed correctly. All in all some transparency now would really help. Its a great router, a great OS but the longer this goes on the more tarnished the routers reputation may get, which in my mind would be really bad news as it has so much to offer, I really enjoy using this routers feature set.

    The issue has now been noted against the XR500 on Amazon , I would dearly like to have one of these again, I await further development . The issue is in my personal opinion one of hardware in nature , in that the printing of the port identities at the manufacturing stage , was messed up, i suspect by a breakdown in communication.
    The way forward should be that netgear fess up to the cock up, withdraw from sale and stop selling the units with the wrongly identified ports, and provide a blanking transfer set to current unit owners with the ports identified in the correct order , that would go some way to saving face in this sittuation (We can but dream)

    Have you contacted Netgear again regarding the issue , i have returned my unit to amazon , for a full refund, i will not consider the purchase of another until a definitive update is received , you say cosmetic , i say there was a cock up at the factory ,, the expectation from the customer is that when they spend a highend price for
    something like the XR500, they want their purchase to be perfect in every way, they dont want an important part of it (like the port sync/led's not providing the correct information)
    Burying this topic will not make the problem go awwy will it , you partnered up with netgear in this endeavour, take some responsibility here and push netgear for an answer

    Thanks for the additional information, all we've been told is that they are looking into it further so I can't comment on that as I don't know either way.
